fuel filter help
« on: July 14, 2009, 02:31:27 PM »
sorry for the newb question.

I have a 88.5 Suzuki Samurai that has been giving me problems. I think its an issue with the fuel.  After I filled up with some gas my samurai started to buck, lose power, and die. I didn't have the problem before this.  I put in fuel stabilizer, changed the spark plugs. But that only solved the problem for like a day. Then it just starts up again. I've been researching and looking online and I think it may be the fuel filter.

Ive been looking around for days for help on this. But I was wondering if anyone knows of a DIY on changing the fuel filter or if anyone can just help me on this. Im having a hard time finding a way to turn off the fuel pump so I don't get a bunch of gas all over the place. Also if anyone else knows a different way to change the fuel filter that would be great. Or if you guys think I have a different problem please tell me!

Thank you so much

Kai

I'm not a Sammi owner, but I imagine changing a fuel filter shouldn't be all that hard. As far as turning off the fuel pump, just find the fuse or relay and pull it. Without the ignition turned on, there shouldn't be much , if any pressure in the lines. Make sure everythings OFF, and then disconect the lines to the filter. I'm sure some Sammi owner here can give you better info than this though. BTW, only real newb question is one never asked.

I dont get why you need to disable the fuel pump to change the fuel filter?  Just be sure the truck isnt running.  The filter should be located on the frame rail above the rear passenger tire.  You wont get much gas spillage from removing the filter, mainly just the fuel in the filter.

I learned the hard way that if you are going to blow out the fuel lines back to the tank, REMOVE THE FUEL CAP!!!  I removed the filter, attached the air nozzle and blew air back toward the tank.  Once I pulled the nozzle off the fuel line, gas started gushing all over!  I bet I drank about a quart of gas that day, lol.

Change your filter, then run some fuel system cleaner in the fuel.

If your still looking for the filter, it's just above the passenger side rear tire.  It's a pretty simple swap out.

As for the fuel pump, it is manual and mounted on the block, so there is no way to turn it off.  But you can pinch the fuel line just in front of the fuel filter with a pair of vice grips so you don't get fuel spilling back out.

Unless someone swapped to an electric pump.  I put my new pump in the same spot the old filter was.  :D

OK so I changed the fuel filter. and I drove it around today, it was driving fine but then it started slightly bucking and lagging again! It didn't die but it still was having a hard time moving. IDK what to do, all of these problems started after I filled up with gas at a local station.

Like I mentioned earlier I've changed the plugs, fuel filter, the fuel pump is like 6 months old I've put in fuel stabilizer, carburetor cleaner.  Also when I changed the fuel filter it didnt look like there was any water in it or anything like that.

it has a 32/36 weber carb

If anyone has any ideas please let me know what to do!

My cousins sammi had the same problem.  Ran great for awhile, until you were trying to climb a hill then started cutting out.  You could change the fuel filter and it would run great for a little while, then start doing the same thing.  His gas tank was dirty, ended up having to drop the tank and have it boiled out.

Sounds like you need to do the same.

Also, check all your fuel lines for cracks.  Thinking back on his problem now, I remember he had an electric fuel pump installed under the hood next to the battery.  The rubber lines coming in and out of the fuel pump were rotten, and were squirting fuel out when you really got on the throttle.  Start at the carb and work your way back to the tank, replace any line that looks suspect.

Boiling out refers to removing the tank from the truck and having it cleaned.  They usually boil them to remove any foreign substance in the tank.

Ok thanks. I also found a leak between the intake manifold and the weber carb.  do you think that may be contributing to the problem? Will this part fix it? I have the 32/36 with electronic choke.

or this part

I also found this one on ebay

I have been having the same problem also. Drained the tank and expected to see a bunch of crud come out. Nothing but clean fuel. I have been thinking of possable plugged pick up filter in the tank.

Changing the filter fixed it for a while - if the problem was in fact caused by bad gas clogging the filter, there is a good probability that you still have that gas in the tank and the filter has clogged again.  Shouldn't be too difficult to see if you're using one of those plastic filters.

just had the same problem with my 86 sammy started to buck cleaned the filter and that helped for a week then started bucking again.

went down to advanced and picked up a $9 dollar inline fuel gauge and i only had 1 psi the weber needs 3.5 exactly so switched to a electric fuel pump and regulator and know it runs perfect again hope that helps.

I know this thread is kinda old, but someone in the future may look this up so I decided to add one other thing.

Check where the fuel line goes into the carb.  Mine has a valve, with a nipple on it that attacthes to the fuel line.  Remove that valve and check to see if there is any obstruction inside the carb or the valve.  Mine was packed with crap that had somehow gotten through the fuel filter.  In my case, it got all the way into the float of the carb and was flooding it out.  I had to remove the carb and take it apart to clean the float bowl out.

Hope this helps someone in the future.
