got a fuel leak, whats my best course of action
« on: July 14, 2009, 08:08:13 PM »
Hey all,

I got a fuel leak on the passenger side of the fuel tank, on the top, there is a line going into the tank, its squirting out from that fitting, I am pretty sure its the metal pipe coming out of the tank thats leaking, and not the rubber hose.  whats the best thing I can do to fix this? everything is pretty rusted, but I am not prepared to replace the tank right now, I just want to stop the leak and get the fumes out of the cab when Im driving.

Thanks for your help

it must be on the return line if it's squirting...can you cut a piece of hose and put some clamps on it? Under pressure might make it hard to stop leaking but it all depends on where the leak is and how close it is to the tank. IF you have any straight pipe you can slide some hose over and clamp.

There is always a few vent on the tanks...can you change the return line to one of the other little lines coming out?

I will have to check for other vents, I could only see a little bit, there is a perfectly places rust hole in my bed that is right over the leak.  I tried to smear some butyl over the leak to tie me over till I can fix it properly (this weekend) but apparently gasoline melts butyl!!!  so you think I could just loosen the clamp and pull the hose past the leak and then reset the clamp?  that will work.  I have spent alot more on this sammy than I thought I would.  I wish it had alottle less rust, but its not bad otherwise.

anyone know what fuel line to get(size wise), I need to buy some new rubber line, and just redo any connections that need it.

autozone has 5/16ths 1/4 and 3/8ths size hoses, I am not sure how to measure the hose, is it outer diameter, inner?  i dunno.  The hose I need is the one coming out of the top passenger side of the tank, there is a little metal elbow coming out of the tank, it has a pinhole in it, but there isnt enough hose to pull it over the hole, so I need to get some more hose and replace that section with a slightly longer piece, so I can cover the elbow completely.  If anyone knows the size of that hose, or how to measure it, I would appreciate it, I have massive fumes in the cab.

Thanks for your help.
