Drilled Tracker Rotors
« on: July 22, 2009, 04:02:30 PM »
Found these today and bought a pair. Anyone heard of them or tried them before?  He had a 99%+ satisfaction rating.   I pay more for one rotor around here than I did for two WITH the S/H charge included.  The ones I bought before weren't drilled either.

Yeah, it seems to me Trackers go thru more than their share of rotors (and windshields too).  They seem to warp quickly to me.  Probably didn't help increasing my tire size/diameter either.  Probably why GVs went with larger rotors and calipers.   Any ways, I'm glad to find some rotors at these prices.

I would go with a known brand for something like brakes, not something you want to go the cheap route with. These may crack if they were not drilled correctly. And is the metal at least the same spec as oem to handle the heat? just my take on it...

I bought some cheap Sammy and Kicker drilled and zinc'd rotors from ebay.  When I got them, the were stamped "BREMBO" on the rotor edge.  Yup, I was and still am happy boy about that.  He shoots, he scores!

Understand your thoughts on quality.  Haven't been impressed with what I have bought over the counter at the part stores to date either though, for quite a few more bucks.  IMHO I think they all are turned from soft steel blanks anyway.   Typically when I begin to pull the old rotors off the steel around the pull bolts beginning cracking as the metal bulges around the bolts.  Don't think that would happen with a harder steel.  For $30 I'm willing to give them a try.  If they work then I'm a happy camper and I know where I'll buy my future rotors.  If they don't, then I'll know not to buy anymore of them and be out about the cost of one rotor purchased locally.   I have a new spare rotor in the garage right now.  When I receive the new rotors I intend to measure and compare thickness, depth and throat to see how close they are.

Most rotors are made of cast iron, not steel - I used the OEM replacement Brembo - sourced from Brembo, via Amazon - for less than your NAPA/AutoZone/CarQuest stuff - like Yankee-Tim describes, they'll have Brembo stamped into the edge, but I don't think come cross drilled and "zinc'd" from Brembo, so I'm guessing someone's buying them, drilling them & reselling them on eBay.

I don't see the need to cross drill (or groove) the rotors on these vehicles and I'd be a little wary - the cross drilled holes have a tendency to cause cracks if not properly done.

They were sold under the brand "Powerstop", which is also sold by Summit racing.  I agree, they may be Brembo's drilled and zinc'd by Powerstop.  But I have seen zinc's Brems.

In anycase, no cracks OR rust in over a year.  I got them mainly due to price, but they also look way trick, especially if you lose the dust shield.  Also, I've found they disperse water MUCH faster than solid rotors.

Received the drilled rotors the other day (the two for $30 set on e-bay).  Compared the drilled rotors to a new Duralast brand rotor I had in the garage.  Pics are below.  As expected, there is a slight thickness difference between the Duralast brand and the drilled rotors.  The drilled rotors being slightly thinner. The cooling slots in the drilled rotors are smooth (versus being rough and grainy as I kind of expected them to be).  Anyway, I took some side by side pics so you guys could see the drilled rotors.  Obviously, I haven't installed them yet.  Will probably be awhile before my current rotors wear down to warrant swapping them out, but I'll let you know how they run and wear when I do.

okay, dumbazz question time.

Are these rotors being installed on offroaded vehicles?

It seems to me that drilled rotors might have a tendency to pick up dirt/mud and eventually overheat/wear faster from the experience.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here...  just curious.

Nope.  My daily driver.  I don't think that was a dumb question at all.  Makes sense that they would though.

I went with a set of no name drilled and slotted rotors off e-bay a couple of years ago, So far no problem. They were the same price as local parts house import regular style rotors, so I went with the up graded items. Great stopping power with only a little noise as is customary with slots or holes as the pads run over the surface. The only thing that I wasn't crazy about is that the new ones don't have the threaded jacking bolt hole to assist in removal. Then again, the inside diameter isn't as tight as the OE style rotors, so they should pop right off when the time comes.

I'd get em' again!  ;)

I hear ya on the threaded removal holes.  I had to beat one off my 2000 that didn't have the OEM threaded holes.  PITA!!!!   But as I stated before, I also had one with threaded holes that literaly cracked around and bulged around the bolt as I put pressure on it.   Still... it was better than having no threaded holes to pull on and it came off with a little BFH persuasion.
