Ripped axel boot....Help!
« on: July 31, 2009, 09:46:52 AM »
Hey All......I have a "94" Side kick 4X4 16valve with a OME 3 inch lift. A shop just replaced the pass. side inner drive boot, because it was ripped. After a week of towing behind my motor home it's ripped again :P.All I did was tow it to the Blackhills from San Diego with no 4 wheeling.
Has anyone experienced this problem before ???! All the best Z06 Gun

I have towed my Tracker over 40,000 miles.  Here is your problem.  With the suspension lift you have you have stronger CV axle angles than stock. When you tow the Tracker with the transfer case in neutral the front axles also turn causing premature CV boot failure. Even though you have your front hubs free the front axles are turning and with the strong axle angle the CV boots fail.  It happen to me twice before I realized what was going on. Here is the problem. When the transfer case is in what I call 4WD neutral both front are rear axles are connected.  Only the input shaft of the transfer case is in neutral.  To fix this problem I built a twin stick transfer case shifter so I could put the transfer case into 2WD neutral instead of 4WD neutral.  I no longer have a problem.  The only other solution is to remove the rear driveshaft when towing the Tracker.

I get the pre-mature failure |removethispart|@ a steeper angle. But, only one week of towing? FWD vehicles usually go 120kish miles before their boots wear out, and they spend plenty of those miles during turns, and through their suspension cycle... how many miles could he have put on that boot in only a week?

Slide the boot on the axle shaft to give it more slack, or remove the clamp
so it can flex with the lift better.

I'd take it back and get a warantee fix from the shop

He has a 3" lift, and the CV's were turning from San Diego to Black Hills.  That is a lot of 4x4 at high speed.   As SKITIME has been inside the transfer case to see how it works, I would follow his suggestion.  Also I would look at lowering the diff and dropping the angle of the CV's, because the boots are indicating FAILURE.

Hey Guys........
Thanks for all the excellent information. I just can't believe that the angle on the drive shaft could cause this problem. The drivers side seems to be on a greater angle and it did not fail. Does antone make a neoprene boot that is stronger or more flexable ???. I've seen these type of boots run on sand rails running IRS with very steep angles and 400hp with on problems. I like the twin stick solution, where can I get information on this conversion.
All the best to you and yours ......Z06-gun :police:
