Header Question
« on: August 02, 2004, 02:36:40 PM »
Hey Guys,

I noticed when i installed my calmini header that the instructions had mentioned that the use of "Header Wrap" would cause premature failure of the header.

The thing is my engine bay gets seriously hot as I live in a tropical climate (31 degrees celcius constant), and even the heat sheild on my air filter gets piping hot. This really drags down the performance of engine when things get hot as it sucking in air thats really hot.

Would this header wrap really be a big problem?

Aren't the new Calmini headers ceramic coated?

I've heard those same stories about header wraps too.

I'm not sure if it's because it holds in the heat or because it holds moisture (when the header is cool).

I'm curious, has anyone put any kind of wrap around their intake tube?

Header wrap or 'header warp'?
Your Calmini header should stand the heat...

And it still gets that hot outside the header?  I thought that was supposed to be the #1 reason to go ceramic coated, a reduction in engine compartment heat and better exhaust flow by keeping it hotter inside the tubes(longer lasting looks was another reason I heard).

Are they ceramic coated inside as well?

Actually, the header wrap problems I heard of were before ceramic coating.  I've not heard anything about wrap and ceramic.

Not very helpful, sorry.

I would stay away from the header wrap.  I used it on the headers on my EB.  They rusted through in less than two years!  I live in the Pacific Northwest...which is awfull close to being a rainforest.  It hold moisture and causes the pipes to rust.  I guess it wouldn't be a problem in drier climates, but buying Headers every other year ain't cool.

ok thanks guys,

A guy at the muffler shop also advised me not to use the wrap either as it traps so much heat in the header is can cause them to crack.

I cant figure this thing out, since installing the calmini header everyone comments on hot hot my zuk smells, and when you lift the hood the heat knocks you back. Maybe i will have to get a hood scoop and fab a snorkel, cause that amount of heat cant be good for my wires or rubber hoses.

No, it's not. It cooks the clutch cable over time, too. I have the same problem with my sammy, the header is too close to the power steering hoses for my liking. Check JC Whitney, I'm sure they'll have some generic hood louvers that will allow the heat to escape faster. When I installed the calmini header in the wifes Tracker, the gaskets tha came with it stunk to high heaven for a long time. I finally went to a factory exhaust manifold gasket, I liked the heat sink design around the spark plug wires beter, too.

Sounds like those headers need
to come with a sandwiched heat
shield to prevent the radiated heat
from roasting the under hood components

I fabbed up a heat sheild out of sheet aluminum for my master cylinder and brake lines. seemed to work pretty well. Also a set of lovers in the hood with and electric fan on them would help alot.

thorley told me that the use of wrap on their headers voids the warranty. the added heat crystalizes the tubes and/or causes them to crack.
