Sqeaking spare tire carrier
« on: August 22, 2009, 12:45:37 AM »
Hi

I had my 01 Grand Vitara lifted via 4" suspension lift and changed to 30" tires. My problem is the spare tire carrier. With the 30" spare tire, the plastic panel inside seemed to start squeaking due to the weight of the tire. I stuffed the glued the inside of the plastic panel with one piece of 1/2" foam, the squeaking sound lessened, but still audible. I also checked on the tail gate hinges, everything checks out ok.

I don't have plans of going to aftermarket bumpers and spare tire carriers, has anyone encountered the same problem as mine? Inputs on how to remedy this will be very much appreciated.

I had a '96 2 door soft top. I switched to a 30" spare and encountered the same noise. The problem with mine was metal fatigue. The spare carrier was tearing the sheet metal of the gate. Did a search on a few different Zuk forums and found it to be a common problem. At least with older ones.

Hi Sage705

Thank you for the invaluable information. How did you remedy this concern? Will a metal plate placed inside the tail gate, using the mounting screws of the carrier for reinforcement help?

My Kick was so beat up that I just left it and turned up the radio to drown it out...
Never found a solution. My Kick was already to far gone by that point, I just drove it into the ground.

Weird.

My 2000 GV has a 31", and a 5-gal Gerry Can carrier.  Even full of gas, no sqeeks nor metal fatigue.  Are they all the same?

I do know the door can shake and cause squeeking from the weatherseal.  A little Armor-all fixes that (well, did in my case).

did you check the bolts that mount the tire holder to the gate.  Had a squeak much like this and found the bolts to be lose.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Let me check on the mounting bolts of the carrier tonight and will let you know soon after.

Btw, I also noticed that the "squeaking" of the tail gate is much louder when it rains. I can't seem to undertand why.

Well to change from a 215 to a 30" tire will most likely cause the carrier to break alot quicker....this is why vehicles with bigger tires had a seperate door/holder to hold the rear mounted tire......besides trying to reinforce the STOCK carrier on your tracker/kick I suggest making a totally different holding system...or find a different spot to put your tire alltogether

P.S I did read your post and yes I seen that you have no plans to make a holder etc etc but there is no CHEAP way or quick fix for the stock sparetire holder (it was manufactured to hold a certain weight) and thats final......if your gonna put 30" tires on why stop at the spare tire holder??

Thanks. I know that an aftermarket tire carrier is the way to go, integrated to an aftermarket rear bumper. But due to budgetary constraints, this has to be postponed at the moment.

Does anyone have photos of these aftermarket spare tire carriers mounted on GVs?

just thought of one spot for you to check where the door latch is there is a c shaped cup on the main body of the GV.  If you see heavy wear marks there you may want to clean it off and put a little grease there.

Also check the condition of the big rubber gasket that runs across side to side at the bottom of the window.  This has spring metal on the inside that keeps it attached to the cross bar, and that metal tends to rust.  As it lost more and more ability to hang on to the bottom of the bar, mine began to squeak more and more.  I just silicon-caulked mine onto the bar and things are all nice and quiet again.

Edit:  Crap.  Just realized you're talking GV, not convertible.  Never mind..
