Is it OK to use Rotella 15w40 oil in my 86 Sammy?
« on: September 30, 2009, 09:25:50 PM »
I have always liked this product and use it in my motorcycles. Many posts from other websites say they use Rotella in all their vehicles. Am I high in using this oil in my new rebuilt 1.3 motor???  Thanks for the responses both good and bad!!!  By the way I am in HOT Phoenix AZ...     ???  Hitman

It's a little thicker then normal but would probably be ok in the hotter weather.  I believe the factory service manual calls for 10w40.

If its a rebuilt or low mile motor I probally wouldnt do it unless you are in hot states.  Def wouldnt use it in cold weather states but I would use it in a high miles motor in summer time.

In my Tracker through the summer I use 15W40 to minimize the smoking & consumption. But in the Winter I switch to 10W30.

Actually use the shell rotella t synthetic 5W40, usually at walmart or pepboys maybe $14 a gallon.
Gives a little bit better cold weather starting protection (not a big problem out in los angeles).
There were some big writeups on other oil forums about using 1/2 0W40 Mobil1 and 1/2 5W40 in the winter, straight 5w40 in the summer, that's what I ran in my tracker, toyota corolla, ford f250 gasser, and 1992 volvo 740 gasser too.  The only weird thing is it tends to leave a funky blue tint to your spark plugs.  I saw a slight increase in mpg, and you can go 7500 miles between changes using a good quality purolator (not fram) oil filter, change oil filter and top off at 3000 miles if need be.
I always get flamed for talking about the benefits of synthetic oil so I won't go there.

You should be fine. I broke in my 1.6l after my rebuild with Rotella. It was recommended to me buy my uncle who has rebuilt more engines than anyone I know. He used to drag race and now he restores old stingray vettes so I took his word for it. I just used it for the break in period and now I currently run regular old 10w40 Valvoline. I plan on switching to synthetic whenever I get a new oil pan because mine is bent and I can not get it to seal for the life of me. Anyway, you should be fine.

Rotella as well as other diesel motor oils tend to have higher levels of
zink which is added as an anti wear additive, other than that, as long as
the oil isn't too thick for the weather, go for it. I ran 15-40 oil in the
turbo kick for higher protection

My Samurai owner's manual lists five possible oil weights, depending on outside temperature. The two highest are: 15W-40 is specified for -15C (+5F) to over 40C (104F) ambient temperatures. 20W-50 is listed from -10C (+14F) to over 40C (104F).  Do you have some special situation that would make you deviate from the manufacturer's recommendations?

It gets to over 110 degrees here in Arizona so 15w40 works well...

I think you will be fine. I use Mobile 1 high milage 10 w 40 with a qt of Lucas at each oil change in my turbocharged 16v and it's great for the abuse, like 6000 miles including 1000 off road on my latest trip. I think the higher weights are great for hot climates and severe duty. BTW, I swear by synth oils. Nothing but in the turbo motor.
