Trailer hitch
« on: October 21, 2009, 09:42:20 PM »
So I just fabbed up an over built hitch for my stock 93 4 door kick and have some questions. One, how much weight can I put on the ball? Two, How do I wire up a light plug in sense the brake and turn light wires are separate. Also I plan on doing a lift when money allows,so should I find some stiffer springs too?

For the trailer wiring you need to spend the extra money and pick up a powered 4 wire conversion kit.  The cheap ones will work but the brake lights will over-ride your blinker lights.

As for how much tongue weight you can put on your hitch it depends on how well you built it.  Generally you want between 9-15% of your trailer weight on the tongue.  If we go with a max of 1000 lbs for your towing from the other thread you will need to be able to support between 100-150 lbs on the new hitch.  I would make sure you can support at least twice that in order to not break off when towing when you hit a bump.  Someone else who pulls with the tracker should be able to chime in with more details.

The most I've pulled with my 4 door is another 4 door on a light car trailer. Pulled just fine, didn't go on the freeway though. My hitch is built right into the frame behind the gas tank so its nice and strong. I have a 4 pole plug and haven't had any problem yet ::)

Hope that helps.

Suzuki (and most other imports) use a separate wire to drive the turn lamp and the brake lamp.  US vehicles double up those circuits.

The converter box - about the size of a pack of ciragettes - converts the separate brake/turn circuits to one circuit on each side so that the wiring harness has 4 wires like common light use trailer harnesses.

Take a look at this article at Ack's FAQ for details:

I hope that this helps!

This is what I have been using for the past several years on my '96 2dr.

http://www.hopkinstowingsolutions.com/products/basic_wiring/taillight_converters/standard_converters/tail_light_converter_60.html

I installed it so the box is just inside the tailgate, and I connect to the trailer with a 4 ft pigtail.

so it looks like I will be going with the box in the first link, so I can use both plugs. as for pulling weight I will take it to the limit and then some. ;D ;D ;D
