New 5.62 R&P - thinking of upgrading from 30 to 31
« on: November 05, 2009, 08:43:14 PM »
Hi!  I recently purchased and installed the 5.62 thirds that I got from skyhiranger on my 4-door kick.  Previously, was running 30 x 9.5s on stock 5.12 gearing.  With the new R&P installed,  my kick is fun to drive again and handles almost like with the stock wheels before.  Now I'm contemplating on upgrading to 31 x 10.5 tires.  How much degredation in performance should I expect again?  Would it be noticeable?  Or would the 5.62 thirds I installed  have enough "compensation" to handle the 30-31 inch transition without any noticeable decrease in handling?  Thanks in advance.

Mine was "fair" on 31's with the 5.83's, and now it's not so hot with 33's.
But I live in the mountains of Colorado, and go through a 4,000 foot elevation change, to and from work every day.

At 9,000 feet elevation, I want about twice as much horsepower as I have...

My 94 tracker with 4.62's was sluggish on highway speeds with 31x10.5's but once I put the 5.12's in it I was very happy. Keep in mind I also ran a auto.

I just traveled back through there, and I gotta tell ya, I don't know how a stocker with big tires could even make it up some of those long grades. Even the turbo was sluggish, but it was only making 3/4 lbs of boost at high alltitude. Less air to compress I guess. A simple adjustable boost valve ( have one just never installed it) would have let me adjust for altitude and get back the lost power. I kind of wish now I would have kept my 31x9.50 TSL's. The 32's did make a real difference in highway performance, meaning LESS of it.

looks like you have room for 32's, why not get 32's in a skinny tire, remember it's not just the diameter of the tire but the overall rotational mass that will contribute to your power loss..  skinny is lighter, therefore turns slightly better, go for it!

Need to consider the weight of the tire in rotational mass as well. My 32x11.50 BFG AT KO's weigh in at 47lbs a tire. My 31x9.5 TSL Radials weighed in at over 68lbs a tire. That's minus the rim. The extra rubber on the ground does give back some in rolling resistance, but over 20 lbs a tire less makes up for it, and more.

my current tsl's weight in at 57lbs each new.  my previous tsl's weighed in at 47lbs each, overall height difference according to mfg specs was only 0.8inches, they are wider but i feel the weight.  ps - swampers rule.
