2001 Grand Vitara V6 2.5 AT
« on: November 06, 2009, 03:39:39 AM »
Hi

As seen in the previous photos I sent, showing my rig underwater overnight in a combination of silt, oil sludge and rainwater due to the recent typhoon that hit the Philippines.  I am slowly rebuilding my Grand Vit, having a parts catalogue came in very handy. I have quite a lot of questions that need to be answered, here goes:

1.  I have seen quite a number of airbag modules on ebay but mine has a different Part Number, do I have to get the exact Part Number?
2.  Assuming I get to buy a set/pair of airbags and the module from ebay from ONE donor vehicle in the US, will this work in my rig, assuming they are of the same model?
3.  What other electrical part/s do I need to replace or check? We just had the whole dashboard removed, including the harness, sprayed contact cleaner on all the connections and put it back with a brand new ECU.

The engine now starts with no check engine indicator lighting up. I am still using the original cluster (surprisingly all the gauges, indicator lights lit up when the key is momentarily turned on to ACC.  But I still have apprehensions on the gauge cluster, moisture buildup and the heat of the pilot bulbs might create corrosion in the future so I am planning to have this changed as well.

Inputs are very much welcomed. I need all the technical assistance I can get.

Do you know where your truck was built?

The reason I ask, there were some differences between my Canada-built 2003 Tracker and the Japan-built 2002 XL-7 when I transferred everything over.  Not sure how much of that was year-to-year change, and how much was due to different factories.  For better or worse, I did transfer all the airbag wiring and components, too, but I don't recall why exactly.  I suspect they weren't interchangeable piece-by-piece (except for the airbags themselves, which were).

The instrument clusters, however, were identical and interchangeable.

Hi Beercheck

My rig was made in Japan. So if I replace the whole air bag system (driver side & passenger side + the module) from a US donor grand Vitara, the airbag system will work in my unit?

As to the instrument panel/cluster, the Japan version has an OE AT shifter indicator on the right side of the cluster which is not the same as those that came out in the US. I think, for this part, they are not interchangeable.

Ugh.  I'm....not sure.  I replace ALL the wiring in my Canada-built truck with Japan-built.  The steering wheel airbags were definitely identical, except for the Chevy vs. Suzuki logo, and I did keep the original.  I just don't recall if the power connection for the module was the same for both trucks.  Sorry.  That would have been good to know.

I'm not sure what your referring to on that one.  My original cluster was for a manual transmission Canada-built '03 Tracker, and I replaced it with a Japan-built automatic transmission cluster from an '02 Xl-7.  They seemed completely identical, but now you mention it, there is that "O/D Off" indicator.  Give me a few days and I'll take another look at my original cluster and see if it's there but just wasn't used.

Since the Japan made Grand Vitara comes with a set of different part numbers (driver/passenger side + module ), I intend to replace the whole assembly with those seen on ebay that are US version. A risk I have to take, just to be on the safe side.
