Sidekick 2dr VS 4Dr
« on: November 30, 2009, 10:30:37 AM »
Well it looks like I might be starting a new build. I have a 90 2dr tracker I got for free.  Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but I don't know how I feel about the short wheel base see that I'm coming down from a XL-7 at a 112in. I like to play in the rocks mostly.  So If you had a get a "new" kick which would go for and why?

I would go with the 4 door.  But that is only because I already have a 2 door for a daily driver and an SJ for wheeling so it would be fun to build a larger vehicle that you can actually sleep in.

If I had to choose between the two for a dedicated wheeler though I would build a 2 door.  For one thing you can take the top off which is always nice during the summer.  It is also nice to have the small wheelbase for maneuvering around obstacles, it is pretty rare you hit an challenge that is wheelbase only.

I hit wheelbase challenges all the time, keep in mind the 4 door is like 10" or so
longer than the 2 door, so it's not going to be night and day like a crew cab truck
and a SWB wheeler, that said, I like the short WB for it's agility around and through
the tight stuff, rocks included

You can get a Trackick with AC, mines got it. Let me tell ya, here in the northeast the hot humid summers almost make AC mandatory. Love mine, couldn't own this thing without it. But, hey, I'm old and feeble, need those luxuries.

just get a 4door jlx , it should have a 16v and ac  ;D

for what its worth, I have had 2doors on 36's, stock ish 4 doors, and our xl7 on 33's and have wheeled them all.

if I where to build more of a hard core wheeler again, I would go with the 4 door for sure, its more stable on the dirt roads and has a bit more room for camping gear, or just coolers and what ever for having a bbq while out wheeling.

the extra wheelbase seems to help allot, but its not such a big jump over the 2 door that it limits its offroad ability.
