Sleeping straight in the GV?
« on: December 01, 2009, 02:06:01 PM »
I'm 6ft tall, is there a way I can sleep straight in my 99 GV ?

The best I can do right now is to have the front seats all the way down, so that it forms a straight line with the bottom part of the back seats, but then the back of the back seats does not fold backwards, do I need to remove them?

I think you pretty much just answered your own question there.

When I slept in my Sidekick I would either curl up in a ball in the back with the rear seat folded forward, or sleep across the bench, or sleep in the passenger seat with the seat tilted all the way back (not the driver's side cause the pedals get in the way)

I'm 6' 4" and I can pull it off without removing seats and building all kinds of fancy stuff. But really, I don't think these trucks were built to be slept in. Get a tent if you want to stretch out, and if you're scared of bears, then I guess just sleep in the truck and quit whining!

or get an xl7  ;D

but the problem is the floor does this   -------___ after the rear seat is folded flat , what i was going to do is build a bit of a platform  with a  sheet of plywood,  with a 2x4 at one end to make everyting level.

i think it was just over 6 feet from the back of the front seats, to the back gate door panel. the wife and i could sleep in the back if need be on a short camping trip.

I literally removed the lower cushions of my back seat in Buster.  Four bolts and they are out of there.  I usually only have my wife unit with me or one other person.  This gives me room to store my tools and kit in the rear floor area, plus allows me to adjust the front seats without jamming into the folded down cushions.  I'm 6'2" and with the front passenger seat folded forward, it works.  Depending on how much traveling gear you have packed in the back of course.   If I can avoid it, I'm done with sleeping in tents.   I'll sleep on broken glass if I HAVE to but my preference is a good pad and a solid roof over the head.

I had a careful looked at the back seat just now, removing the lower cushions seems like the easiest way to do!

The questions is, can the front seats be set to flat when the back lower cushions are removed and the back seats folded down?

If it does, then with some sleeping pads and sleeping bags, I can sleep well in the GV!  ;D

haha, I'm not exactly scared of bears, but I'm planning a road trip to Inuvik, which is inside the arctic circle . I think sleeping in the will give me better weather protection.

As I recall from this past weekend, the front seats WON'T lay completely back (flat).  They do recline nicely.  Wife unit cranked her seat back for a nap during a long drive this past Thanksgiving.  Of course you could always slide the front seat forward and fold seat forward for even more room.  You will need to stuff some gear down into footwell of the rear seat to fill the gap though.

Good idea Lance, do you camp in your XL7 too?

I'm thinking of making a storage compartment where the rear seat leg room is (was).

mine does lay completely flat with the head rest removed.

the only thing I'm not sure is if it will do the same with the back seat folded down. (clearance problem)

If the rear seat bottoms are flipped up, or the rear seat backs are folded forward, then you won't be able to recline the front seat back much at all.

You can do like in the picture, but you have to scootch the front seat up forward so much that your leg room disappears.  It looks awkward, not very comfortable, espeically where the hinge is.

I think the best way is still to just recline the front seat, it still reclines very far, leave the headrest on, and just use an extra pillow.

I don't have anything planned for tomorrow so I'll try messing around with the seats again and try taking some pictures.

makes me wish the back door opened upwards or like a truck tailgate thus increasing floor room  and maybe allowing a tent to be built into it..........\

Would Like to see what ideas you come up with guys followed by a picture too and what you did......if you find away to make it all work nicely......

Aside from buying an XL7 lol
