Are Jerry Cans Illegal?
« on: July 23, 2004, 03:06:39 AM »
Are steel Jerry Cans illegal in Canada?  I asked for a steel jerry can at my local army surplus store, and the man tells me their illegal here (some bull about jerry cans catching fire or blowing up or something).

Anybody know?  How about you yankees...are there similar rules down there? All I want to do is mount a jerry can on the tailgate...and now they want to make me a criminal!

Please advise.

Why not just get a plastic one at Canadian Tire?

There are no laws where I live (CA) prohibiting you from using a portable gas can aka "jerry can." When you buy a new one,  there is a treatise worth of legal warnings on stickers and imprinted into the can.  At gas stations it is the same, warnings after warnings.

If it is illegal in Canada, how does anyone fill the gas tank on their lawn mower?  ???

Here in FL-USA, it is 100% legal to have plastic or metal jerry cans.

I think your bud there might just be dumb.

The only time one should explode is if it isn't properly ventilating, which is the owner's responibility, not the jerry can's.

i live in bc canada, and i worked at a gas station a year ago, and metal ones are definetly illegal.
i think old ones might be exempt, but no new style ones are ever filled
the dangerous part is sparks that might come from it when you put it down, very unlikely, but if you like slide it sideways dragging it, im sure it sparks...

You sure their not illegal when mounted on the back of a vehicle? This i could see, someone rearends you while carrying 5 gals. of gas on the back and instant fire. :o
You can buy metal gas cans here, but i'm not sure if you can mount them on the back or sides of a vehicle.

well, that's weiar because i saw some at canadain tire for 39.99. check out there website, canadiantire.ca.
I wouldn't see why the would be illegal if they sell them at canadain tire, if so they should be taken of the shelf, because they are useless then here in canada.  pierre

someone beat me to it but you can buy them at Canadian Tire. My friends have army surplus Jerry cans (they restore military vehicles for fun) and we use them all the time. If you use army ones you need the "donkey penis" spout too.

They need something special to be sold in california.

Heres a blurb from generator joes carb combo:

"All cans are certified to California CARB (California Air Resources Board), UN Standards and TUV. UL Listed. Manufactured and N.A.T.A tested to comply with Australian Standard AS 2906-1991. Cans produced under terms of ISO9001.CARB APPROVED FOR SALE IN CALIFORNIA"

I don't think Carb is worried about sparks. Could be the filler spout.?

I saw the metal jerry cans and mounting plate in the Canadian Tire catalogue...and thats what promted the question about legality.

So I called the local 42 division and asked.  They tell me that jerry cans (steel, not plastic) have been illegal for years and years in Canada.  No offence to any cops reading this...but he answwered my so quickly (without looking it up or anything) I wonder if that cop knew what he was talking about.

But on the other hand, strapping a five gallon steel box filled with flamable liquids just inches above my plastic rear bumper does kinda sound like a recipe for disaster.

Hope those guys at Calmini ship me my rear tube bumper soon.  Waiting already one week.

i think they might be called legal if they are permanently attached.
maybe thats how canadian tire gets away with selling them.. ???
i dont see how a metal one on the back is any more dangerous than a plastic one, they're both gonna blow up if you get rearended anyway.

part of the reason metals ones are illegal is because of idiots =) lol when it starts to rust some idiots just keep using it..also plastic is more likely to take a shock and disipate the force with out blowing a hole in the can

there really isnt anything wrong with metal cans unless they are old and rusy..then u have leak problems aswell as the metal will not be as strong

Jerry cans, what's that? j/k  The only thing I heard about them is like others said, the mounting of them externally on a vehicle. As you can see I have one on my sami and haven't been ticketed for it.
The whole deal with it sparking I see a better chance of a plastic one unloading static charge and possibly igniting fumes which has happened.
