1.6efi swap to sami...like/dislike?
« on: July 21, 2004, 07:02:44 PM »
ive been considering this for the last month or two, the 1.3 is leaking oil, burning a bit, and the carb is acting up
its all fixable, but i might as well upgrade seeing i have time and money for the next while
i'd probably by a complete wrecked trackick so i could take whatever parts needed... and use the calmini kit to install it with

now for the questions:
1st of course, do you like how its turned out, and is the mileage comparable or better?
2nd, how complicated is it and how long does it take? run into any major problems?
3rd, mine has a mechanical fuel pump, is it a hassle to install the electric one?
4th, how complicated was the wiring, just plug the harness in and go? i highly doubt it goes that easy..

k, thats about it for questions, answers/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
thanks, Andrew

Definately worth the swap! It makes the zuk alot more driveable. I did the 16 valve swap, and I wish I had done it sooner. I had to wait for the funds to allow. Keep driving the zuk while you locate a deal on the parts rig, and save a little extra for the big day. I would try to get a complete parts vehicle, simply for the fact that it is complete. You can always wheel and deal with the leftover parts to make up for the expense of it. I went with trail toughs kit and wiring, I am not a mechanic, but I would easily do it again. If you have a little help, or know your rig, it will be no problem. The wiring seems a little overwhelming, but I just sent it to trail tough and let them modify it for my rig. It is very well laid out and marked for a nearly fool proof hookup. As far as the fuel pump, mine was carb'd too, I went with the trail tough, and used the one they sell. It is a little noisy, so I would check into possibly getting a samurai efi tank and pump. Again, just run a couple of wires to it. The wiring harness has a lead to use so the pump gets power when needed. Do a little searching on some sites and read everything you can, to understand better. Don't be scared. It is not that bad at all. Check with trail tough for more info, advice and any help. They are very informative and patient. Overall, I spent about $700 on the kit, wiring, fuel pump, and centerforce clutch. As for the donor vehicle, it can very greatly, just keep your eyes peeled for a deal. I found mine at a small town body shop/salvage yard. The swap could be done in a short weekend, if you have all of your parts ready. Your zuk will be like a night and day difference. You will benefit on inclines, low rpm power, and reliability just to name a few. I am running 31's and a spoa, all of the gearing is stock. It will make you zuk more fun. DO IT. Good Luck, Jeff                                  check out my pictures            http://community.webshots.com/album/145670395vWSRjT

can i fit the trackick fuel tank in? or use an external frame mounted one possibly instead?
and also, i guess i have to run a return line right? mechanical pumps dont have those i hear.

did you use the sami rad, or the trackick rad, i figure swapping as much stuff that the 1.6 is accustomed to would work best.

and what wiring did they have to modify? im thinking of what the computer runs and gets input from and i cant think of anything other than liek the o2 sensor that might need adapting.. although im sure it plugs right in or i can put the trackick one in the manifold instead

lots of questions :P hopefully someone feels like posting an answer or two
thanks, Andrew

Tracker fuel tank will not work, too big. You can use an external inline pump, that's what I used. It is noisy. That's why I suggested using a stock samurai efi tank/pump. Your carb has a fuel return line, you will use that for a fuel return. You will use a stock samurai radiator. The 1.6 will be fine with it. You will pull the entire engine bay and all of the under dash wiring from the donor vehicle. Send it out to get modified for your vehicle. There are quite a few sensors and doo-hickies that will be on the 16 valve engine.  So make sure you get them all unhooked and keep the other end that it plugs into, you will need them after the wiring is converted. Your samurai wiring will be all original. After you have installed the engine, you will add the wiring harness after it has been converted. It will lay out like it belonged there, and you will only make about 4 or 5 splices into the samurai harness. The splices are clearly marked and everything will work like it should. Like the tach, ignition and fuel pump. On the 16 valve swap, you will use the 16 valves stock exhaust manifold.  Your first o2 sensor is in the exhaust manifold. The wiring harness will have the correct hook up for it. You will also have a 2nd o2 sensor after the cat. convert., you don't have to have it, but your wiring harness will be set up for it. I don't have it, and it runs fine. Just keep looking into the swap, and keep asking questions. Find out as much as you can before you do the swap. Don't worry, it will be alot more clear as you read more about it. It is worth it! Check out the link, this guy has a couple of very good articles walking you through the entire swap. I think his description is very accurate. Honestly just follow his steps, it is that easy. Jeff                     http://members.cox.net/aftermarket4x4/comp_proj.html

hey, thanks a lot, very very helpful, i was planning on doing the 8valve swap so it should be a little easier
lots of things to take into consideration still
i'll start looking for a donor vehicle
