ignition timing
« on: January 19, 2010, 08:25:08 PM »
hey  I have a 88 sammy.  header, ported intake and head, cam, and weber. with 2 inch exhaust all the way out and 4.5 lift.
new motor in it. stock distributor and coil.
I am running like 18 degrees of advance and still no ping.  more advance I put in it better it runs out.  how far do u all run out on the timing?  any suggestions?
also how can I tweak my distributor and what can I do to the ignition to make it work better.

With 18 degrees of advance and no ping, you sure you installed the disty on the correct tooth to begin with? If so, that's great, a nice power gain for free!

My bad, I was thinking of the timing on my 95 16v which is only 5 degrees BTC. Maybe the Sammi engines run more advance to begin with.

hey thanks. not sure what is going on.  I know that is a lot of advance but gee it pulls 5th with stock gears and 30 tires all day long.  no heat prob or no ping..  and noooooo  smog crap anymore.  with a gear reduction it should be a rocket!

Runs good, pulls strong, no ping, don't get greedy and mess with a good thing
leave it alone and enjoy pulling 5th with 30" tires

It's going to depend on the grade of fuel you use - I'm running 19* on a Swift (same G13 engine)
