transfer case clank?
« on: January 30, 2010, 06:00:35 PM »
It's an 84 samurai, which is called a beaver in the Philippines, with 1.0 liter motor.  I swapped in a 5 speed.  Now I get this 'clank' coming from the out put shaft, gear area of the transfercase....i don't think its the cross bearings...so what is it and how do I fix it , short of hunting down another transfer case
Thanks for any help...

Make sure the short middle drive shaft u-joints are in proper time with each other.

How would they not be?  It is a solid, one piece driveshaft.

bingen, did it clank before the 5 speed swap?  If not, then more than likely it is something that you swapped in that is making the clank noise.  Does it clank all the time?  Just when accelerating?  Just when coasting? Just when shifting gears?  More info will help us diagnose the problem.

Sky, I think there was clank there before, but now that I've been fixing the body and everything, maybe just now am noticing it.
It clanks bad when you start off, also a little when you shift...

Check your t-case and transmission mounts.  My SJ-410 clanked like that when I tore one of the mounts in two.  Does the t-case or transmission shift when you take off as well?

If you have the 970cc (1.0 L) motor you probably have an SJ-410 instead of a Samurai.  Useful to know when your looking for replacement parts.
