Does this mean production of the Samurai could continue?  Or just that this dispute has gone on so damn long that they agreed that they got bored of hating each other?

I doubt they'll go back to producing Sammys. 'Zuki has become caught up in the 'bigger is better' theme.

On a similar note I see that Ford, rather than fix their SUV roll over problem, has found another solution and made it an advertised feature.

Air bags for the roof. What a novel idea!

Or did Ford owners have a problem properly inflating and maintaining those tires??

Small cars are really taking off.  At least here in Canada they are so the Jimny might very well make it back here. :D

ford never had a roll over problem..firestone had a band run of tires..which was not helped by the fact that ford put what firestone said was a "low" psi for the tires in the door jam and owners manuel

it was a combination of explinations after the whole firestone bridgestone fiasco...firestones are not bad tires neither are bridgestones and fords do not spontainiously flip over or got wildly out of controll when a tire goes flat...firestone just had a bad run there a billions of firestone tires in use at this very moment that have no problems at all

No rollovers? Sure... and neither did Sammys. <g>

"In closing arguments, Lenny Vitullo, lead attorney for the plaintiffs, said Ford knew of flaws in the Explorer's designs and Ford engineers proposed four design changes to it in 1989, but only two were implemented."

"Insurance industry statistics show that people in all but the heaviest SUV's have higher death rates in single-vehicle accidents, mostly due to vehicle rollover."

"According to NHTSA, SUVs rollover in 37 percent of fatal crashes, compared to a 15 percent rollover rate for passenger cars.  Rollover crashes accounted for 53 percent of all SUV occupant deaths in single vehicle crashes in 1996. Only 19 percent of occupant fatalities in passenger cars occurred in similar crashes. "

If the problem was the tires and not ford, then why were the only vechicles rolling over fords? I am sure that there were some other makes to but the main one was ford. How many other SUV's had the same tire size with no problems? Just a thought.

no the problem is the drivers... just as you would not rock crawl a corvette you would not try high speed cornering in in a SUV.....
the problem with samuria was that it was mostly bought for its "cute factor" and owners were not educated by dealerships on its handling caracteristics

shut up and wheel it.. sick of hearing oh my (fill in blank) stock can climb mountians yet the only off roading its seen is the curb their g/f ran over!

Exactly! That's why all new SUVs have it posted on the sun visor avoid abrupt manuvers!

Mike, said it right.  Firestone is a fine tire, many factors lead to the "fiasco"(good description).  Another vehicle that did and still does use a similar tire is the chevy light duty silverado.  There's where the driver comes in.  A soccer mom buys an explorer and doesn't know how to drive it.  I've never seen a guy who drove silverado pickups for years do something dumb and roll it.  It's a different breed of person.  As far as the tires go, ever seen a car roll and NOT blow a couple of tires.  I'm willing to bet alot of the explorer rolls didn't even have a tire blow first.  But just like the reason for cell phone bans in NY, when certain people f*ck up, they find any reason, true or not, to blame someone else.

But, getting back on track.  This dismissal may not result in new Samurai's, but may open the door for a new replacement model.  Maybe a Suzuki Shogun ;D...or just a North American Jimny

Actually the Explorer was a re-design of the truck that CU rolled over almost as much as the sammy. The original Ford truck that was so easy to roll? the Bronco II ! And that was LONG before the Firestone thing...
Had a cool sig pic till I changed the text... sigh...
