that is an uncommon problem on ANY vehicle.    I've had a camshaft snap ONCE on me, because I stressed it too much installing it wrong by accident.

The cam is hollow, if not all the way at least part of the way.
I'm sure the oil pump had nothing to do with the cam breaking,
the cam only drives the distributor, unlike some engines that also
use the camshaft as a power source to turn the oil pump also.

My best guess is the cam got jealous  after you spent all that
time on the bottom end putting in the new pump and wanted
equal time, and now you are going to give it some much needed
play time, pulling the head and getting the new cam in there

The good thing is, if you have a 16V, the head doesn't have to be pulled to replace the cam.
I would pull the cam caps and see if the cam is scored or damaged in the journals from lack of oil.  I am wondering if the pump wasn't pumping enough oil and seized the cam?

You will need to look at the pressure relief valve, sounds
like it's stuck partly open
