how often do 16v heads crack?

how often do 16v heads crack?

How often do 16v heads crack? I bought a 96 16v today that the kid said he overheated to the point of dieing. Got it home and checked the compression and the front two have very little compression so I am thinking the gasket is blown for sure but I was wondering if the head might be cracked. When they crack can it be seem with the naked eye or does it only show up in a test?

I think it depends on how bad the crack is...I saw on one show they did a test to see with a special resin or something like that but can't remember it was a while back and it showed it had a crack even though you couldnt see anything was wrong with the just your eyes...some cracks are so small but still cause problems and cant be seen basically

yeah,  some cracks are invisible to the naked eye, but show up on X rays or microscope setups of some kind,  but I have also seen a chevy 2.2l head tht was visibly cracked at a coolant passage.  its totally possible.

Came across a cracked head on my brothers 16V engine, it had been
over heated to the point of quitting too, this crack was in the coolant
jacket and leaked into the oil soaked area under the valve cover.

I said just have it welded up, but we found another head, from a 16V
TBI engine, with no cut out area for the MPI EFI injectors to go, so we
got out the air grinder and hogged out the aluminum to create the space
needed for the injectors to go, PITA but doable, good thing the head is
not cast iron, would of taken a very long time

Well I took it apart and this is what I found


I think it got a little hot LOL

The head bolts were all finger tight or close to it except 2 in the middle. I got worried about reuseing them so I ordered new ones.
I did however break the clip on the TV cable so if anyone has a TV cable for a 3 speed they want to sell I would be forever in your debt.

you dont ever re-use old head bolts anyhow.  if you take em out, REPLACE em.   thats the proper way.

Is that a TB cable? on a 3 speed? this is a 16V engine, I thought
they all came with 4 speed trannys?

According to the data plate its a 3L30 and its my understanding that's a 3 speed. This is a 96 16v.

Ya, the 3L30 is a 3 speed auto. I learnt me somthin today.

Didn't know the 16V ever came that way
