just went through it last year.  My numbers were very similar to yours, tried everything else first (including carb rebuild) to no avail.  Fianlly went and had the cat replaced, and lo and behold it passed with flying colors.

You could try and cheat through, run the gas low, and pump in 2 gallons of E-85
and get it tested, bet it would pass, then either go fill with regular gas or drive the
mix out and refill, just don't let the mix stay in the tank very long, it likes to break
down non alcohol resistant rubber and plastics, won't hurt for a short time

so we just took it to the exhaust shop to have my brand spankin new catalytic converter from Low range put on and it turns out it's not legal in california.  :( so we had the guy put a different cat on (more $$$) and when he pulled off the old cat, the guts of it were totally gone. so new cat, just bought a new o2 sensor and hoping this will work. otherwise we may have to try some of the other "add this to your fuel" or "use this kind of fuel" techniques. does anyone know off hand if Low Range Offroad has a california smog legal catalytic converter?

Ya, isn't California nice, the cat that was legal just a year ago, and only cost
$75-100, is now illegal and the right one costs $250  >:(  I had to get one
put on the SideKick so I could pass smog, after I took the turbo off.

isnt that so much B__S__?    cali is about the only place that actualy gives a crap about that.  its so dumb.  down here so long as you're not blowing clouds of oil smoke, or shooting flames out the tailpipe, you're good and the cops dont care, plus nobody does inspections here.

yeah. i originally bought my dad the cat because his exhaust system was in a box when he bought the rig and i assumed he didnt have one. turns out he did, but now it turns out he just had the shell. lol i thought it was a good idea to hold onto the cat because i need one too, but now i guess it does me no good anyways.

I would keep it and weld it in yourself next time you need one,
or find someone that needs it on the board, I would of bought
it and put it in my Trucklet if I knew you had one, mine cost me
plenty and I never did get the smog check  >:(

well our exhaust guy would have welded in for us no problem however we were not sure if our smog guy does a visual check on the cat or not. didnt want to take the risk and get flagged. i will have to have my dad ask our smog guy if he does a visual check or not. supposedly they are stamped differently. if he says no, then i may end up keeping the cat. otherwise if i sell it to someone on the board, they can get one just as easily from low range. i can also just send it back to low range and get store credit which is okay because i always buy from them and i am sure i will get use out of it.

There is no way for them to know when the cat was installed, and
it could be an install from over a year ago  ;)

The old cats are not illegal, just the new ones have to be the
new much more expensive type

It is my understanding that once your vehicle has failed "Peoples Republik of Kalifornia" standards, it has to go to a "C.A.R.B referee". If you cannot obtain a "stock" cat, then you can use an aftermarket cat.
I hate Kalifornia! and I grew up here!

yeah, i went from a gross polluter to reading that were unreal, some were at or next to 0's after installing the new cat.  I was really expecting to have to smog it again this year, but I just got my renewal notice and....no smog needed!

Just out of curiosity....what are we californians paying to register our sammies?  Mine is $67 this year.
