I need some help!!
« on: February 13, 2010, 04:01:59 PM »
So I picked up this 93 sidekick (1.6, 8V) and pulled the engine to put in a rock crawler.  The engine was smoking pretty good so I rebuilt it.  I replaced the pistons, rings, bearings, new head with new seats, seals valves and springs.

Here is my problem.  After all the new parts and pieces the motor still smokes like a banshee.  I have diagnosed the problem to cylinder 4.  Cylinder 1,2,3 all burn clean while cylinder 4 smokes.  I know this because I pulled the exhaust manifold and watched each cylinder.  All four cylinders have 150 psi of compression so I am ruling out bad rings.  I have replaced the spark plugs, dist., and rotor.

I have had the head off three times trying to eliminate the problem.  The head gasket is new and does not leak.

When I first fire up the motor it does not smoke to bad.  It is like it builds pressure and then starts to burn oil.  I have replaced the PCV valve and cleared all the hoses.

I need some help!!!  I have tried everything and can't figure out why it is smoking so bad.  Any insight will help!
Thanks. :-\ ???

It sounds like the middle (scraper) ring is installed upside down, this
will cause the ring to leave the oil in the cylinder and as it gets hot
starts to smoke as it burns off.

Did you install the rings yourself? I have looked long and hard to find
the right way to install the rings, some are hard to see the mark.

Thanks,
would the compression still be good with the scraper ring upside down?

I am like 99 percent sure the rings are in right.  The engine really doesn't start to smoke untill it gaines RPM's and it smokes bad.

The thing that is confusing me is that it smoked just like this before I rebuilt it.  The smoking was the reason i rebuilt it.  Would the TBI injection cause the engine to smoke?  Would the ECU cause it to smoke?  These are the only things I haven't replaced.

Thanks

What color is the smoke?  Does it have an odor?

The smoke is blue and smells like burning oil.  There is no antifreeze in it.

No the TBI wouldn't cause the smoke, The only other thing is that the cylinder
is worn badly (tapered) and the ring can't control the oil. This will require another
rebuild, bigger pistons and new rings.

Did you hone the cylinders? If not the rings may not seat, and will smoke.

If you have the manifold off let the engine sit over night and look in the exhaust port of your troubled cylinder and see if you can see any oil running down the valve stems. It could also run down the intake valve stems but that will usually smoke right away because its burning the oil in the combustion chamber. On the exhaust side it's after combustion so things need to get hot before the oil turns into smoke. If you see oil running down the valve stems it is usually the seals but could be the guides also. It's not hard to bugger those little valve seals when installing them. You can have great compression and still have an oil control problem with ring, piston and cylinder problems. Are you sure the rings are in right and didn't get broken when installed?
