home built hybrid
« on: February 14, 2010, 09:50:44 AM »
ive been reading about this on here and other sites and am planning to start my own this week .
i have a complete 98 tracker rear and a complete spare sammy rear .
now i do have a couple questions that may have been addressed before but i couldnt find it .
im planning to just cut down the axle tube on the short side .
and use my sammy long tube on the other .
can i use my sammy shafts in the tracker 3rd or do i need to swap side gears?
will cutting the short side dow work or do i need to use the sammy end ?
can i use the tracker brakes?
thanks for any help

The only thing you want to swap is the center section, everything else stays with the Sammy rear end.  That way you can use the stock Sammy rear axles with the larger third.

Are you doing this to get a larger third member or just so you can use the 5.12 gears?

I did mine.  I used the sidekick center.  I cut near the welds where the tube are welded to the center.  I took the sammy bearing holders at the weld.  It is my opinion that to use sammy tubes is a wast of effort.  the ar about.11" thick and I aready bent mine.  So I used 3/16 dom 2.5 OD.  welded it together straight, good luck you need a jig. If you dont have a jig you might be money ahead by buying trail toughs with the 3/16 dom.

sammy axles and kick diff are same splines.
Kick is about 2 9/16 OD
use sammy brakes with sammy bearing holders
