A two wheel drive tracker?
« on: February 18, 2010, 07:18:27 PM »
So here is a question for you tracker/sidekick people I have found a two wheel drive tracker can't believe they made that but I guess they don't need 4x4 in the south. I'm sure that the powers steering alt, starter, parts like that would be the same but what about the tranny and such?Would it unbolt fron the tail shaft and bolt onto the transfer case or would there be a difference or special parts needed?
Thanks!

yep, unbolt the tail shaft and put a t-case on there, works fine, at least
the one I swapped over worked fine.

Watch out for the splines, some are 16 and some are 26, it's obvious
but I don't know when it started, and if this applies to the tranny t-case
connection or the tranny to driveshaft connection

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to remove the "tailshaft" and bolt a tcase on.  With true 2wd trannys, you can not do this.
The only way a tcase will bolt onto a "2wd" tranny is if it is actually a 4wd tranny with a dummy "tcase" on the back of it (very, very few trackicks had dummy tcases).  The dummy tcase looks just like a real tcase, but doesn't have a front output shaft (obviously) and just has a cap (or the hole isn't machined out) where the front output normally comes out.
And yes, I am talking about trackicks here, not samurais.....for anyone that is wondering. ;)

I should say it's the tailshaft housing, if it unbolts from the tranny
then you can bolt on the T-case.

I did this to Eric Yolk's 2WD Track/Kick, his was a CAMI built 2WD, I
retained the transmission because it worked well so I didn't want to
chance the trans that came with the T-case being bad, so I swapped
the T-case over.

I know it doesn't look like the T-case will work, I just tried it and
sure enough, it bolted right on, so If you have a 2WD and the tail
housing unbolts, give it a try.

I don't know if all the trannys are the same, this one had a long driveshaft
and I had to use the one that came from a 4WD Track/Kick after the swap,
it also did not have the dummy T-case as some Track/Kick come with.

I would like to see a pic of the piece that you removed from the tranny to be able to bolt the tcase on.  As far as I know there are 3 types of tranny configurations out there.....
1....a 4wd tranny with a tcase.
2....a 2wd tranny.
3....a 4wd tranny with a dummy tcase (I have only ran across these in some 2wd x90s and some 2wd 4 door trackicks).

It's long gone, I did the work at my friends house and when
he moved it got recycled. I never thought I would have a need for it.

It was a 92 I think CAMI built car, Post a message to Yolk on the board
here, he just PMed me a few weeks ago, he moved to back east for
cost of living and work, he's looking to replace the now sold Tracker with
a Sami

Sounds like some of the GM trannies:  Remove  t-shaft housing, change T-shaft to 4wd (in Chevy/GMC cases), bolt on T-case.  Some Tailshafts work for 4wd and 2wd applications, if it's a 2wd it pokes right out of the t-shaft housing, if it's a 4wd it splines into the T-case and the case has its own t-shaft.

That is the problem (one of them anyway) with trying to put a tcase on a trackick 2wd tranny.....the 2wd and 4wd tranny output shafts are not the same length, so the output shaft would have to be changed in order for it to even mate up to the tcase.

That's right, I remember better now, there was a 4wd Tailshaft housing that bolted on to the
2wd tranny, and the T-case bolted onto that, didn't have to change the output shaft, and the
splines fit right into the T-case input.

I remember it was really easy to do, I would of used the other trans and T-case if I had to change
the output shaft, but it was just unbolt from the one, and bolt it onto the other.

I didn't know there was Chevy and Suzuki transmissions, (both manual) that were put into
these Trucklets, I have a GM TH180 trans, but it's an auto

Ohh ya, I thought the dummy T-case would look like a T-case?

This was the end housing from the 4WD trans, and it bolted onto
the 2WD trans after I removed the tailshaft housing.

OK, now I know what I was looking at, had no idea that's what it was

??? ???I still don't think what you had was a dummy case, more like a 4wd tailshaft housing or adapter, the dummy case does look like a regular case(without the fronk output machined out.  Sorry to split hairs, but gotta put the right info out there:

Dummy case..looks like t-case,  tailshaft housing for 4wd, does not look like a t-case and goes in between the t-case and the trans(wouldn't be surprised if they are on the ones with the dummy case as well)

That's what I always had thought but Skyhigh said it was a dummy t-case, and having never
seen, one I thought that's what it was  ???

On my '96 4x4, 4 speed auto,  I have a 4wd output shaft housing, which is bolted to the t-case, then the whole mess bolts to the trans. To the best of my memory, this is the only way I've ever seen a t-case connected to a trans.
