Wired engine problem.
« on: July 20, 2004, 04:09:00 AM »
I have a wired problem... after I got back from my last camping/offroad trip I've been getting run on... YES run on like a carbed engine. I have a 91' 1.6L EFI Tracker. I turn the key off and it sputters and runs for 3-5 sec before dieing off... ??? ??? ???

Another wierd thing is I'm having starting problems... I turn the key and nothing... no crank... no sound... nothing. I have dash lights and batt and alt is good running order. Try it again a few turns later it starts. It happens every 20-30 starts... so not everytime.  ???  ??? ???

Could it be my ingition switch for both problems?? Key hole contacts are crapping out and so it's sticky?? Anyone have any ideas or had this before???

Thanks for any help

My vote is on the ignition switch. I had an EFI Escort do this, replaced the switch and all was better. You should be able to get a switch fairly cheap from a junk yard or Hawk. If you did not want to spend the cash to get it set to match your key you could always carry 2 keys (if oyu lock the doors).

I had a bad switch, took it out, filed the
contacts smooth, a little grease and good
as new, I do remember this being a PITA
tho, and it might not be for the faint of
heart mechanically challenged, but I fixed mine.

BTW a dripping/leaking injector could cause run on too
;)

Well....... not really, an EFI motor cuts the
fuel when the ignition is turned off.
