should i chop the back of my vit off?
« on: June 04, 2005, 10:24:59 PM »
i've been wanting to do this for a long time now, probably ever since i got my vit, which was a year and a half ago.

what are peoples thoughts on this? plans are to cut the rear 'tub' section off the vit, and fab up a nice little flat tray. but will be considering it at the end of this year, early next year.

something very similar to Wild Weasel's vit, but not as extreme with the tubing. just enough room for a full size spare to be laid down, and maybe 1 or 2 small tool boxes.

ok lastly, does anyone have any pics or links to other chopped vits? i have the wild weasel one already.

thanks
Steve

if I ever get a 4 door, I'll chop the body off and make it into a flat bed.   I dont know if a 2 door can be made to look good as a pickup, the rear is too short

it would look something similar to wild weasels vit.

i dont really have the need to actually have a pick up style, as i dont need to cart much stuff around. just need some where to put a full size spare.

also, seeing as i can have the actual bed up high off the chassis, i can fit the fuel tank up high, and as well as recessing the tool/storage box into the tray so it sits underneath. hmmm, ideas.

thanks

I think the only reason Wild Weasel's 2dr looks good with the back chopped off is because of the extended wheelbase and exo, but that's just me :-/

But hey, do something unique, cool looking, and be damn sure to post pics when you do it ;)

Why Not try it.
Worse case scenerio is you hate the look and sell all your mods off cheap to some one like me right? ;D
    Just Kidden'
Here locally there's a guy who's done something simular to his sami. I think it was part of extending the wheel base and mean dump from a steep climb that motivated the mod. However he's made extensive use of Diamond Plateing and made what looks kinda like a miniature utility bed. It fits his 38 in spare and has tools boxes along each side. It looks really sharp and is even functional.   By the way until last year he competed in the Rock Crawler circuts with this sami.   Then Last year he did the unthinkable and switched to a Tube frame Buggy.

You know, the more I think about it, the better I like the idea.

I was originally in the process of cutting the rear fenders straight back, but with the progression of rust in the tub, I think it'd be much less hassle just to chop it off after the seats.

Here's a pic of my Tracker as it stands right now:

hey explosivo, i saw your thread at zukicrawlers, and that made me think about it even more.

i'll be following your build, at what ever pace it will be going at.

but i really do like the idea and look of a custom mini tray back. i guess i've got my mind set on it now, and have it planned end of this year, early next. i know thats a while away, but i have other things on the vit  that i need to get out of the way first.

we will be doing the chop on my mates sammy first, and if that goes ok, we'll do mine.

i'm also trying to find out how i can fix/weld the back onto the cab. on wild's, he's re sewn the soft top to fit. i'd like to do this, but not sure if i can do it. i would like a hard solid back with maybe a perspex rear window.

If I don't get too lazy and just leave it open (mine's gonna be primarily offroad rig after the axle swap), I might use my old tin top tail gate for the back, but that's not removable. You might look around for one of those at a scrap yard and see if you can make it work ;)

i dont think i'll have a hard time looking for something to put in as a back, like WW used an old soft top tail gate.

i'm just not sure on how i can join it to the existing body. i can weld it up, but not really wanting something thats not pretty to look at. like the weld seams etc etc.

i guess i'll have to sort it out when the time comes.

thanks
