I've wired a 4 pin flat connector to my 87 Sam to be used for towing a trailer. All lights and functions work OK except the brake lights. Scratching my head on this one. Any suggestions?

Are you getting voltage to your 4 wire when you put on the brakes?  What type of converter are you using, powered or un-powered?

I guess I'm looking for the color code of the rear lights including the brake lights. The trailer I'm going to tow works on other vehicles so I'm sure it's a wiring issue in the Suzuki. The brake lights on the sam itself work ok.

Not sure what you mean by converter. I'm just splicing into my sam tailights. All the light functions, turn, 4way flasher, running lights work except the brake lights. I assume if I wire the left/yellow and right/green wires from the trailer to the brake wire on the sam end it will work. I don't know the color code for the sam brake light.

I should mention that all the light functions on the suzuki work OK including the brake lights. The trailer lights work OK on other vehicles. It's just the trailer brake lights don't work (the brake lights on the sam come on when connected to the trailer).

When switching to a 4 wire system you will need a 5 wire to 4 wire converter.  You can get away with a 3 wire to 2 wire since you already have the plug.  If you get a powered one the turn signal will continue to flash while the brakes lights are applied.  With the standard passive lights the brakes will over-ride the turn signal.

you need to connector or you need to put a seperate blinker and brake light. When I mount the lights into the tail gate I add one of the convertor boxes and it works like a charm.

OK. I now have a 5 to 4 wire converter. Where do I find the red(brake/stoplight) wire on the samurai?

I've found the other 4 wires and am using them. The 5th (red) wire...not sure  where it is. There are red wires with various colr stripes. One of those? Is it solid red? Thank you

It should show on the instructions for your wiring kit.  You should have 5 wires going into the box:

Running Lights
Left Turn Signal
Right Turn Signal
Brakes
Common Ground

And four wires coming out:

Running Lights
Common Ground
Left Brake Light
Right Brake Light

When your brakes are on both the right and left brake light will be lit.  If your turn signal is on the proper brake light will blink.  If your brakes are on and a turn signal is on it will depend on if you have a powered kit.  If your adapter is powered then your turn signal side will blink and the other side will have a brake light.  If you went with the standard adapter then the brake lights will simply be on.

Thank you, I've attached all the wiring to the samurai and they work OK except the red stop light connection on the input side to the converter. I can't find the stop wire(s) on the sam so I can connect the red wire on the converter.

Just splice the brake wire going to one of your tail lights.  You only need one.
