2.0 tracker
« on: February 27, 2010, 01:43:09 PM »
I just bought a non running  99 tracker with a 2.0  for real cheep .I started by doing a compression  test & no compression  so i took off cam cover & found a broken timing chain so now Im trying to gigure the cheepest way to go about fixing this do I  a: pull the head to look for damage to the pistons & valves or
b: put the timming set on & hope for the best  or
c:  put timing chain on enuff to do another compression test
do valves & or pistons always get damaged when a timing chain breaks ? or is there a chance things can be udamaged
If I have to understand don't bother explaining

The 1.3 and 1.6L (including 16V) engines don't have any problems when a belt
breaks, but the 2.0? I bet you lost all the valves, and hence no compression, so it's
pull the head, look for damage, rebuild, probably need pistons if they got holes
from colliding with the valves, depending on the miles you might reuse the rings, but
over 70K I would replace them too.

The oil in those engines is critical to the chain tensioner, always use the reccomended
5w-30 (I think it is) in these engines, otherwise the chains get stretched and break

Good luck, good thing you got a good deal on it

well Im  pretty sure it has no compression because the cam shafts arent spinning but it could have bent valves or piston damage too  I just dont want to take it any further apart than i have to & I mabee not be able to see damage. I guess Ill  get the timing chain parts & put it together enuff to do another compression test  before I rip the head off. if it fails a comp test mabee ill find a used engine & install the new parts on that
the odometer says 176778 its a lcd looking readout so i dont know if thats onehundred seventy sixthousand  seven hundred seventy eight  or seventeen thousand six hundredseventy seven point eight. anyone know if the read outs last #is tenths or not?

in general, I would assume your engine has valve damage.   even if your cams arent spinning, I would expect ONE cylinder at least to have closed valves, which would allow SOME compression buildup.

smartest course of action is to pull the head, inspect pistons and valves.    there really is no "cheap" way to do things when timing chains break.

the !& 3 cyl did have some compression  but not enuff worth mentioning 30 lbs on 1 &60 on 3
I ve done a similar repair for someone else  (but it didnt affect MY wallet)so I just took the head off & we had it redone but it didnt have bent valves just some worn gides so we probablly could have gotton away without removing the head but it wasnt a tracker

Rotate the cam very carefully and check the valve lash, if the valves are bent the clearances will have opened up. Its not a definitive test but it should give you some idea.

Good call Rhino, I would of just ripped the head off  ::)

I had 200,000 when I did the head, I never adjusted the valves
and burned #1, then at 230,000 miles on mine I did a total rebuild.
You cannot do the head on a high mileage engine and have it last
more than 25-30K miles before it takes out the rings and compression
goes away, so if you have to do the head with new valves, then you
would save time by doing the rings too

My wife's 2000 did that and no damage was done. Replaced both broken cam gears, broken timing chain, upper timing chain tensioner I broke and wala another 80,000 miles. You have to buy repair parts anyway so install and then take a compression test then you'll know if you need to pull the head but I don't think you'll need to do that.

1.3 8v,1.6 8v and a 1.6 16v are interference engines a 2.0 is a non interference engine so your good on undamaged valves and pistons. Get cam gears and timing chain your going to need them anyway then you can compression.

This is not correct, 1.3 and 1.6 8V and 16V are non interference engines, at least with stock
pistons and cam lifts, flat top pistons and high lift cams may hit

wilds rght the 1.3, 1.6 and 16 valve all are non-interferance motors:

as for the tracker 2.0 I'm still searching!

ok what i found out was that the 2.0 is an interference motor. Your best bet is to pull the head and inspect the valves, just be safe with it dont Bullshit your way around it because you want to be cheap.....Ebay has killer deals on head gasket sets i picked up a full engine gasket set for my 1.3 for 35 bucks!
