Problem with GATES BELTS ???
« on: March 12, 2010, 06:33:18 AM »
Hi, I am a new guy here with a 2006 2.7L V6 XL7 and need help.

We all know how difficult changing out the Fan & Alt, and P/S & A/C belts on our little friends are, so I did not do it.  I had a bad experience with my Nissan several years ago, and told myself I would pay to have it done the next time.  Anyway, I have been using Gates Belts for over 10 yrs now.  So I bought Gates Fan & Alt p/n K040365 and Gates P/S & A/C p/n K040430 and took our good 'ole Zuki down to the dearlership (probably my first mistake).

The dealership tell me that they cannot get the Fan & Alt belt to fit.  I say okay thinking I may have gotten the incorrect belt in the right packaging at O'reilly's.  So I get another one  from O'Reilly's anyway, and take it back to the dealer.  Upon close inspection at the dealer both belts I bought have the correct marking on them and match the packaging.  The dealer notices this, I notice this too.  The dealer has also yanked out the Bando brand belt that was on there, and I ask them to compare the Bando belt to the Gates belt.  There is no visible difference other than a little more give in the Bando belt that came out of the XL7.  I leave the dealer with the impression that they can and will put it on and call me when its ready.

A day and a half later I call the dealer to find out whats going on ( day and half..REALLY??...for a belt job.)  They tell me its ready but I cant get an answer on the price or details.  Whatever, I go to pick it up, and they tell me that they were unable to put the fan and alt belt on but got the P/S & A/C on with no problems.  So overcharged and not real happy I leave, with only one Gates belt on the Zuki.   Has any one had problems with Gates Belts before or are the Techs at the Dealer just not as good as I gave them credit for?

Also forgot to mention that they the dealer allegedly did replace the Fan & Alt belt without informing me and were unable to tell me what brand they used.  But it sure as hell was lot more expensive than a Gates belt, and I have no idea about the quality.   >:(

Just check the computer here at NAPA and the Alt belt I'm showing is 25-040372 which is longer than the one you have.

I believe you, but I have not had a problem with Gates belts in the past.  Also the Gates Website also said it was correct size too.  So, what's going on.  And when you say its longer is that because the measurement is from the outside to outside of the belt? which is like1/100 of an inch or is it a more substantial increase?

Okay, here is the story from the Dealership.  They put on the "Next size larger belt".  Later this morning I talked to the dealer repair shop and they said they did use a Gates brand belt.  I checked the belt on the the XL7 and could in fact make out Gates on it but could not see the P/N on the belt.  On my invoice for the work the dealer did list the belt's part number as K040370.  I went to the Gates Website and found that this Belt is listed for use on a 3.5L v6 Kia Sorento  ???.  The belt does appear to fit properly too.  The website did not indicate this belt is for a 2.7L v6 XL7.  Weird, Huh?

So, Anyone have thoughts on this?
