recommendation for affordable tires?

I'm kinda needing new rubber on the 87 sammy, so I need a few suggestions on tires.    I want something capable of offroad driving, but I'm not wanting to change from the stock 205/70/15 tire size and I'd like to spend less than $500 for a set of 5 tires if I can.   I've got a local place that'll mount/balance tires for nearly nothing, so I'm not worried about that. 

any suggestions? 

the only real reason I'm retaining stock sizes is I dont really want to modify anything, or lose fuel mileage as this is a daily driver and toy at the same time, and I'm pretty broke in general.

Where are you located at?  You might want to look at stepping up to some 235/75 R15 tires.  There are a lot more aggressive tread patterns available that will serve you well off-road and they will fit on a stock Samurai without require a lift, just a bit of front bumper trimming.

will 235's reduce fuel mileage at all?   for me, thats a HUGE deal, considering I pretty much live to drive on the road.   

living in florida, with lots of sand, I've got a few tires in mind, one of which is a snow tire, but supposed to do well in mud.  well ok actually 2 different tires in this category.

Looked at those, but anything in that size requires modding my body and I'm very opposed to that.

With the 235's and a well tuned engine you should be able to keep in the 25mpg range without a  problem, possibly more.

well, I'm not interested in going to 235's. period. 

I'm looking at a winter tire, and thinking about it, if it'd be a reasnable off road tire as well as on road, I'll do it.  noise for me, is pretty much a nonissue.  what do you guys think of these?

It really just depends what you want to do.  any non- MT road tire isnt going to be much of a offroad tire.  But if your just looking for something to drive down the road and go light wheeling then a AT would work.  I have had radial MT's from Fleetfarm for about 6 years now and love them on ice, road, mud, etc.
