trans trouble
« on: March 29, 2010, 10:39:12 AM »
I am a fairly new owner of a late 88 model samurai, i have nearly rebuilt the whole front end repairing the 4wheel drive locking hub assembly, with doing this i have found that it was built with alot of 89 parts. My problem now is the shifter locks in 3rd gear about every 5 to 7 days, the reliable friend who turned me on to this samurai is positive it has a new transmission, so my ? is what could be causing it to lock in gear

Sounds like a shifter sheet issue or possibly a broken pin.  Does the shifter allow you to move it back and forth while in gear?

Take a look at the following article, it will give you the steps needed to pull the shifter so you can examine it.

Sounds like something inside your transmission is binding.   does it do this with the motor running?  when it does it, will it come out of gear if you shut the engine down?

It does do it while it is running and it does not unlock when the motor is off. i have to unbolt the gear shift and pull it out. then i use a screw driver to unbined it. i have had a friend tell me it the clutch cable may need ajusted or the gear shift its self my be worn out. just looking for any and all advice

Almost sounds like the shifter bolt may have broken off inside the trasmission... When it isn't locked up, do you have a lot of excessive play side to side with the shifter?
