LESS RPMS
« on: July 10, 2004, 03:37:48 PM »
Mutant Zuk is up and running with new engine, still a few small bugs to work out like the carb. Will probably change it to a Holley 2bbl.The other thing that is a plus in one way is either the Toyota axles were geared lower than stock,or the Samurai T-case has a low gear set in it.This thing will climb a tree. The down side, on the highway its geared to low with the 31's(I was going to go to 33's but now it looks like 35's or larger to get the rpms back to a normal rate on the highway) Going to Royal Blue for some testing as soon as I get this rpm issue fixed.     Later M.Z.

Tell me, I can help.

Not sure if diff's are geared low or T-case is or both.Toyota axles came out of a 85 truck 4cyl ,should be 4:10's stock. T-case is 87 Sammie,I know even a stock T-case has some gear reduction, but this is a lot more(45 mph 3000 rpm's in 2wd) that could break in new engine a little hard on a distant run. When this rain lets up,mabe tomorrow I can check it out more . Thanks M.Z.

Is that 3000 in 5th gear? If so, it sounds like you have a 4.16:1 t-case, or maybe even a 4.89:1 case. Either way, it shouldn't be that much of a problem. The sammies usually run a little high anyway. What's it run at 65?

Let me give you a little more history on MUTANT ZUK. Engine 2.0 litero ohc Datsun or Nissan ( about 105 hp with present mods ) trans 4 speed manual ( 4th gear is 1 to 1 ratio no over drive ), hydraulic clutch,7" intermediate shaft to Sammie T-case, output shafts mixed Sammie/Toyota to Toyota diffs.I was planning to go with low gears in T-case after some trail runs to work out the drive line bugs and compatibilty of different parts working together. But with its present gearing that won't be a problem. So thats 3000 rpms in 4th gear at 45 mph, havent had it to 65 might be to many revs for fresh engine. It looks like taller tires is the easiest route sense I need more tires anyway. If I could get about 55 to 60 mph without running at high rpms that would be nice, but if I get to large on the tires with this short wheelbase I don't won't it leap frogging all over the road either. What would you say calculate tire rpms or distance traveled in one rev for the different sizes to try for a match ? Thanks M.Z.

Sounds like you need to find a 5 speed.

I thought about the 5 speed,I'll have to find out what the finale drive ratio in 5th is.Would like to run 33's to keep center of gravity low.Maybe it'l work out, just hate to have to find a 5 speed for this set up and change it all out(other projects in the works) Later M.Z.
