carb and throttle cable ?????
« on: April 03, 2010, 07:46:16 PM »
I recently picked up my 86 sammi. It needed a carb clean for sure and I am thinking that it may need a throttle cable too. When i picked it up I immediately drove it about thirty miles on the highway, fourth and fifth gear seemed sluggish to me. when i finally got it home i let it idle and listened to it. It was chugging burping and making all sorts of un even noises. so my first action was to clean the carb out. I used a carb and choke cleaner and a little of the seafoam cleaner. It now sounds much better at idle and seems to be "happy". My question is that when im traveling down the road in fourth or fifth I periodically hit flat spots in power, or an occasional sputter. could this be my throttle cable or just a dirty carb still?  Sorry for the lenght of the post and thank you in advance for answers.

probably a combination of dirt in the carb, old plugs/wires and possibly a clogged fuel filter.    mine feels decent in 4th, and is just SLOW in 5th, so I just cruise in 4th mostly and dont worry much.

Was the flat spot on accel Sammi's can get there vent tubes partly plugged and cause
a vaccum in the fuel bowel, most of the vendors on this site sell a Suzuki TSB fix a additional
vent tube to install(only works on OEM Hitachi carb) under $20.00 easy to install 3min. max

right before I picked it up it had a tune up with a new distributor and plugs and wires. Ill check the fuel filter. and it is not on acceleration. if i push further on the throttle it will go away instantly. it is only when Im at a cruising speed.

Have you checked fuel pressure? pump could be going away.
since happens under load and if checks ok w/o load, hook up
pressure gauge run out hood vent and have passanger watch
gauge while on a drive.
when bogging down or sputtering by giving more throttle the
accelerator pump may be helping until pressure picks up.

I checked the fuel filter and it seems to have gone away since I replaced it. Thank you for all the help.

What I did was got  a bottle of the seafoam cleaner.  put the directed amount in the gas and the directed amount in to the engine. Than, you un bolt the airbox from the top of the carb. turn on the car and pour the directed amount into the intake from the top. make sure you are giving it throttle because if you dont it will stall on you. you will hear it struggle a little when you pour it in that is normal.  another easy method is to get a spray cleaner. with the spray cleaner you do the same as the seafom but ONLY spray the cleaner into the intake on top of the carb. again make sure that when you spray the cleaner into the carb you give it throttle.   also check the in line fuel filter that was the main problem in my sami.

the fuel filter is on the passenger side just inside the rear wheel attached to the frame.  That will probably fix the problem, but a good clean will be good too.

I think theres also a screen on the carb for the fuel inlet pipe, kind of a backup fuel filter of sorts.   if its clogged with crap, it may cause the bogging.  a good general tuneup is probably in order though.  all filters, carb clean and POSSIBLY rebuild(usually just cleaning does it) and you can probably be ok.
