Dark glass.
« on: July 02, 2004, 02:16:41 AM »
Put some 20% tint on the truck all around just to set it apart a little (did it myself ::)). Hope I pass inspection DOT in VA don't play! They were pulling over lifted vehicles in VB last year and breaking out the tape measure, checking for CATs and so on!
One time I took my old 4dr in for inspection at a Shell GS and when I got it back the fog lights and tint were all balled up on the passenger seat. The mechanic said he had to remove that stuff in order to pass the vehicle.

Bummer. Most states will have tint laws. I know mine does, I have mine tinted the legal limit and its hard to tell there tinted. Some people get away with it and some don't ??? I've seen cop cars with blacked out windows.
But window tinted does make it look better, I have all my cars tinted ;D

I put some on mine (here in VA too) and haven't had any inspection problems (knock wood!), but I can't remember the %.  It's not the darkest, but it's not the lightest either.  Maybe this Website will help... http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/tint_va.html

I too like the look and for me it really helps in the dark with the headlights from other vehicles.

Good luck with the inspection.

THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT! I've been telling people that SUVs and PickupTrucks can go as dark as you want on any window/windows behind the driver/front passenger windows. This just proves I was right, thanks. ;)

Without permission, the inspector can not mechanically remove or mod anything on your vehicle. He can not charge for anything other than the inspection fee.

As for removing the fog lights, just pull the fuse for them. Having stuff on the car is not breaking the law. But what part of the law do they break?

He told me that in the state of VA when you switch to high beem it must cancel out your fog lights. The next day I had my lights remounted and tapped power for the fog light relay from the low beam power wire in the steering colum. That way when I turn the high beams on the fog lights go out.
He didn't charge me for removing them but I was still pi$$ed that he didn't ask first.

They're pretty strict here in Jersey too, I think it's legal for the back and two rear side windows in on the back doors, just not the drivers side and pass. side front and windshield.  I want to do the same and go for the same look for my 4 door, as you did with your's.  It ought to look nice with the red  ;D

we dont have inspections in iowa but the MAD mothers bought all the state trooper tint instectors a while back.  stopped 3 times now, i have double the darkest 3M makes.  the state trooper told me it was the darkest he has ever tested, 7%.  that is it lets in 7% ;D.  local cops dont care less they get you for something esle.  and 20 miles away where i work the cops there wont stop you cause the county attorney wont prosicute for it ;), cool lady.  i dont drive on the interstate less i have to.  i love it, but.... at night, in town, at a stop sign WATCH for people biking or walking across in front of you!!  you cant see them if there are no street lights close till they are at your bumper. :'(

I wish there was a way to tint the rear side windows on the soft tops. That would look good ;D
Over here (Portland Or) the tint limit is 35% but it just doesn't look dark enough ;D  The way the law was stated (so I've heard) you must be able to look through one window (front sides) and out the other and still be able to see.

Careful in Oregon. Cops pulled my friend over several times. She has a medical excuse, but they still stopped her. (Eugene "it's illegal unless factory installed" cops.)

U can use the spray to tint soft top windows... and the plastic films seem to stick, but it can be hard to get all the bubbles out.

I recently tinted my soft top windows with the cling type tint.  $15 to do the whole thing.  Works fairly well.  Easy to do if your has the zip out windows and you can lay them flat to work on them.  I did all mine in less than an hour and I'd never tinted anything before.   And who knows, maybe it'd help get you out of a ticket if you peeled them off in front of the cop, then you could put back on later!
