Oh crap............
« on: April 25, 2010, 08:33:27 AM »
 ???
Here's one for you.....
One of my fellow chaps has got himself into a pickle.
He has a 1997 X-90 that he tows behind his motorhome.
Seems the last time he towed it, he went only one click on the shift lever,
meaning in reverse instead of neutral. The transfer case was in neutral when
this happened.
It has the 1.6-16 valve with the auto transmission and now he has no reverse.
Any opinion as to what sort of damage occured.
Haven't had an opportunity to do anything with this yet.
Just trying to get a heads up before digging into it.  :-\
Pull and replace or is there hope for this transmission?
Thanks one and all.
Luke.

certainly sounds like reverse=toast.    this is pretty much why I'd rather just unhook the driveshaft for automatic transmissions.  lot of effort, but to me, worth it.

If the T-case was in neutral there would not be a problem, so he
also forgot to put the T-case in neutral and the trans was in R.

Toasted R is your result.

If the T-case is in neutral, it will not turn the transmission, there is
a bearing and a shift dog that disconnect the trans in neutral.

I tow all the time with T-case in neutral and driveshaft installed, tho I put
the trans in N just in case the T-case lever gets bumped or bounced
into gear, as a safety

Sorry for the bad news

Thanks for the replies.
If reverse is indeed whooped, would it be worthwhile fixing it?
Any idea where one could find on of these autos?
What years would fit?
Regards, Luke.

That's a 4 speed overdrive trans, any of that type I think will be fine.
I think a used will cost you less than a rebuilt, unless you feel up to
doing the work or have a friend that can, the parts are likely now
much, if available outside a full hard parts set.

Try the wrecking yards in your area, and then there is Hawks but
it's gonna be painfull on shipping

Found one up here for around $700.
Low k's as well.
Any idea what went wrong with it other than the stupid attack?
Burnt out reverse clutches?
We have no problem with the re&re.
Could it be as simple fix, ie. changing reverse clutch pack or ????????
Thanks again for info.

Ya, no fluid moving burned the clutch pack, if that is available as a
single instead of the whole parts pack I think it would be a
cheaper fix
