samuri tow dollying questions
« on: May 03, 2010, 05:48:25 PM »
When I go to load my samuri on a car dolly. I load it in 4 wheel low and when it is all straped down. I put he trans in Neutral and the transfer case in neutral and when I go to pull it the real end is locked. I dont understand cause when its not off the dolly. I can put the transfer case in neutral and have it in 1st gear and there is no drive so I know there is noting broke. Please someone help as im very confused as to what im doing wrong.

thanks

When you say it is locked do you mean both the rear tires drag?  Do you have a rear locker or spool installed?

Make sure that your front hubs are unlocked.  When the t-case is in neutral the front and rear drive shaft's are locked together as it is in 4 wheel drive.  If your front hubs are locked in it will try and turn the front end and could be the cause of your problems.

If you are flat towing the Samurai for long distances it is generally advised that you just pull the rear drive shaft.  The original towing instructions tell you to pull over every 200-400 miles, start up the vehicle and run it in gear for 5 minutes with the t-case in neutral to re-oil the bearings.

The stock Samurai does _NOT_ have a true (2WD) neutral.  With the T-case in neutral, the front and rear driveshafts are locked together.  If your hubs are unlocked, you might be OK for a while at reasonable speeds. The transmission should be in gear.  Suzuki says 2nd, but I've been experimenting with 4th, with notable success (saved an engine just last month).

There's no fast and easy way to fix the lack of a true neutral. You _MUST_ remove the interlock ball from between the shift rails inside the transfer case, so that you can select 2WD and neutral independently. I did this and then installed twin sticks so I could have a true (2WD) neutral for flat towing. The Petroworks Split-H would also work.

You might be able to tow the Zuk backwards, with the front down and hubs unlocked. But, I cannot speak to that -- you're on your own there. Maybe someone else knows and can comment (I've only ever flat-towed).

The previous owner had one of these rear driveline disconnects installed.... works great.
Not sure that I would pay the $$$ for it but it was nice to already have installed.
