Going to the autoparts store tomorrow...
« on: July 06, 2004, 02:58:51 PM »
...to pick up a few things to help my poor little backfiring Tracker. But I have some questions.

I want to pick up some new wires... what are some good brands to choose from that won't break the bank?

I might as well splurge a bit and get some plugs, since they are the ones that came in the Tracker when I bought it a year and a half ago (albiet sandblasted shiney new). What's everyone using for plugs?

I also want to get an MSD Blaster II coil. I looked this coil up on Summit Racing, and wondered if the different options were different accessories that came with the same coil, or if the coils are different? If so, which coil do I ask for at the store? ???

I changed my wires about a year ago, but I can't remember the brand.  They were precut wires and I've been pleased with the outside of them anyway (I have no idea what reisitence per foot is for them).

I just put Bosch Platinum 4s in.  I like the design.

Next I'm going to put in an Accel 8140HV.  45k volts sitting in epoxy to handle high vibration.

I went to Carquest and just got their generic plug wires. Seems to have fixed the problem. When (if) I get the MSD coil, I'll go with some different wires :)

On a sidenote, my joy at fixing my backfiring problem was promptly shattered when I caught a wiff of something burning under the front accompanied by some nice grinding sounds. I stopped at a gas station, and my tire was leaning in about 8"... like this: \\ >:( Now I've gotta fix that, too.

If it's not one thing with this pile of shit, it's another  >:( >:(

i have a blaster II coil that i have been very happy with, though it came with a bunch of extra stuff i didnt need.  i just use 7mm plug wires, couldnt find 8mm round here that anyone knew for sure would work.  i put in some ngk plat. plugs and could instantly tell a difference, love em.

I think this might be something I'll do in the near future. Which wire on the coil is which? How hard is it to wire the coil up? Pics? :P

I'll piss and moan about it until it's fixed, then I'll love it and be happy as hell. Stuff breaking (especially when I didn't do anything directly to brak it) really bums me out... but I guess that's natural :-/

well this is one case that a pic really isnt going to be a big help cause its so simple.  there are only 3 wires coming out of your coil, big center one for the rotor cap is pretty obvious and the other two are for the + and - lil posts on the coil on oposite sides of the 'to rotor' wire.  just mark them and hook them back where they go, the new coil will be marked like the old one with the lil + & - like on a battery.

Excellent... after taking a look at my coil the other day while replacing the plug wires, I noticed that there were only 2 wires (beside the one that goes to the distrib), but I didn't realize that there was a positive and negative right on the casing... should be really simple when I get the Blaster 2 :)

thanks!
