Home made hitch?
« on: May 14, 2010, 06:27:04 AM »
I want to put a tow hitch on the back of my Tracker.  I know that my truck is only rated for a class 1 hitch, but would prefer to install a class 3 type so i have the 2" tube.  That way I don't need a different set attachments for my tracker and for my Dakota.  looks like i can't purchase a class 3 that is made to fit my tracker, so it will have to be a modify job. I was just thinking last night about that factory installed round pipe below the bumper.  I thought i could buy a cheap $10  2" receiver tube, notch that pipe out, and weld the tube in the pipe with a reinforcing plate over the top and back.  I was wondering if anyone knows how thick that factory installed round pipe below the rear bumper is?  The loads for class 1 are pretty small, so it wouldn't have to be too beefy.  any thoughts on this?  does anyone know if anyone has tried something like this before?

That pipe is no where near as strong as the box channel used for receiver hitches.

I took a tracker hitch (not receiver/the single ball type), removed the ball and welded the 2" receiver to the piece of flat plate that the ball mounted to. This gave me the stronger brackets, stronger cross brace and an easy mod to turn the hitch into a receiver.

I would but I sold my X-90 to 'Digger' a few years ago. PM him and see if he still has the hitch.
