Ever run with no shocks?
« on: May 29, 2010, 01:42:57 PM »
My Sammy has a Calmini lift in it and it rides really rough and doesn't have as much flex as it should.  I don't really know what lift is in it because it was already there when I bought it.  Anyways, I'm thinking about pulling the shocks and seeing what it feels like.  Maybe I just need to find some old, worn out shocks to try.  I'm a bit leery about running on the highway with no shocks, but I guess I'll see.

I looks like it's the 2" Shackle Reverse kit.  I might try backing the shackle tower bolts off a bit and re-tourqing the shackle bolts and seeing if that makes a difference and then attack the shocks.

running without shocks=BAD BAD idea.  one bump and you could easily lose control.

shocks are part of the suspension for a reason,  believe me, you need em regardless of on or offroad in my book.

I have a few questions for you to ponder before you remove your shocks,

1st, Can you see brand and part numbers on the shocks you have?  If so try to cross reference them online or in a parts store, maybe they are shocks designed for a 1/2-1 ton truck that some one was able to get under there is so that would be a much stiffer ride then normal.

2nd, Do your leaf springs sag down on each end instead of lifting up?  If they do that would not help the ride either.

3rd, Are the bushing/shackle bolts so tight that they do not allow the leaf spring to move back and forth the way they are intended to?  That would also affect/effect (one of those two words LOL) your flex and your ride too.

as will seized shock absorbers which obviously dont move and only serve to make the ride very harsh.

If the lift was done without increasing the shock length then they may be maxed out which would make for a poor ride.  Slide the shock boot out of the way, if there is more than 3 to 4" of the rod showing, then that may be your problem.  Also these are light little girls so like was mentioned check the part number and see what rig the shocks you are running were really made for to ensure the valving of the shock is not for something big and heavy.  If you play with rolling without shocks keep it slow and on a back road for only as long as you need to trouble shoot and cure your curiosity, you'll see what Bob is talking about.

I can't see any markings on the shocks but the bushings and body colors match the pictures on Calmini's site, not that that says anything.  I'm not gonna run down the road with no shocks, I'm just going to try to diagnose the problem.  I broke my arm yesterday so I probably won't be doing a whole bunch.

my rear shocks fell off 6 months ago and it took me 4 months to put them back on. i honestly
didn't notice any difference, i do live on a small island that has no real roads though so i dont know what it
would be like at highway speeds.
