Need advice on Tracker purchase
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:11:39 PM »
I'm looking at getting a 1995 Geo Tracker and I wanted to know a few things.

First, here's the text on the ad (pics below):

Clean, good running Geo Tracker with 99k. Current safety and emissions tests. Manual 4 wheel drive. New head, new catalytic converter, high performance cam, new timing belt, water pump, new front brakes, new BF all terrain tires and rims. Good working AC and newer clutch. Excellent shape for a 1995. Clean title in hand. Ready to go. Daughter can't drive a clutch so it has to go. Great on gas.

Here's the pics:

Okay so now for the questions:

1.  He was asking $3800 for it, which I know is way too high.  I may be able to get it for $2900.  Is this a good deal?  Too much?  It's a Utah vehicle.

2.  Do you see anything in the pics that is alarming?  The engine looks different from another 1995 Tracker I looked at.

3.  Considering he replaced the head and water pump I'm assuming the head gasket blew.  What should I look for to make sure the repair was done right?

4. Anything I should know about this model year (common issues, major flaws)?

My plan is to make this my daily driver and leave my Navigator in the garage for weekend jaunts.

Any help you all can provide would be immensely appreciated!!

Oh yeah, here's a pic of the Navigator..... :P

$2900 is a decent price for my area... $3800 is way to much

The pics look good to me, good and clean... would wonder why he has multiple airfreshners on the shifter.. trying to cover up some stank???

When you go to test drive it, drive it around to get her warmed up then leave it running when you get back... let it sit there idleing and see how the owner reacts to it.. and if she heats up sitting there. These motors are great about running cool, even with low coolant so it should not heat up much at all.. Check for leaks.. everywhere..
4. Anything I should know about this model year (common issues, major flaws)?
No common issues that I know of.. I am kind of surprised that it had had major mechanical failure with only 100K on the motor though..

I would also check the front seats under the covers.  See if they are put on for style or to keep the seats clean and not because the seats are torn up.  Probably the former as the rig looks to be pretty clean.

Make sure the tires don't rub, you can also check the back side of the front fender well and see if the plastic is worn at all.  The tires and wheels look a bit off-set so that may be a problem.

I would say it looks like a nice clean vehicle,   take it for a test drive and see if everything works right with no unpleasant noises.

the price definitely is high, if you can get it for 2900, you've got a decent deal,  but go over it with a fine tooth comb,  if you can, look under the carpets for rust too.  dont trust the underside of te vehicle to say its a solid tub.

I asked the owner about the head and he said he replaced it when he put in the cam.  Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely use it.  I'm heading down to go look at it in a little bit so I'll let you know what I find.
