Rubberized undercoating the inside.
« on: June 28, 2004, 08:09:21 AM »
Well I finally started doing something to the Tracker.  :D

I gutted the interior except the dash and the plastic from the widows up.  :o Boy it looks HUGE in there. LOL

Went and bought a bottle of Prep-all, two cans of Napa's MAC Rubbereized Undercoating, a roll of masking tape and a plastic cover for painting.

I started today and vacuumed the floor and walls and then prep-all'ed them. But thats as far as I could get today since I got to get ready for work soon.

Notes to me(and anybody reading this).....

PREP-ALL works very very good! It takes off paint overspray too! Even the origanal 99 overspray(oops) the inside floors and walls used to have a purple tint to them but they are now all a nice shiny silver color. :-[

I'll put up the plastic tomarrow and probably start spraying the undercoating too. It needs to be done and dry by Friday so I could put it all back in to make a trip to Illinois for the 4th

And that is where you have officially have run into a problem. The rubberized undercoating will not completely dry, and when it gets warm, it gets gooey and all over anything tha touches it.
You might want to take the undercoating back and get some of the spray in bedliner stuff.

I'm doing the same thing, but as idaholwb said, it never really hardens, and will wear off onto anything that rubs on it really easy.

BTW, I'm putting all my carpet back in afterwords (undercoating just because of the massive amounts of rust/holes in the floorboards of the $100 Tracker). What're you planning on doing when your done undercoating it?

It will dry/harden but it will take weeks, maybe
longer, sun and heat will help, but you might
want to get bed liner for a quick coating before
the fourth like Idaho said

I'm gonna be putting the carpet back in too.  I asked the guy in Napa about how long it would take to dry and he said about 12-24 hrs. Thats why I bought it. How much is the spraycan bedliner? I didn't see any there so I'd have to go AutoZone or Advanced.

Well I took the 2 cans of undercoating back and got my $10 back  :) Then went to AutoZone and bought 3 Spraycans of Dupli-color Bedliner for $24  :( and new brake pads too

Used all 3 cans and probably could've used 1 more but it looks great now. Covered all the ugly white caulking around the seams and made everything a nice semi-shiney black. The 4th can would have been for touch-ups and a bit more rough texture where the floor could be seen(under the rear seat when folded up) maybe later. But now atleast I could get the interior back in on Fri morning and not worry that it's not dry.

I'm not worrying too much about letting my undercoating dry... I'm sticking the carpet back in tonight or tomorrow (whenever it dries... dipshit brother threw it out in the rain ::)). I figure it'll help hold it down once it finally dries, too :D
