How will it hold up off road?
« on: July 26, 2010, 05:23:28 AM »
I have been building and it's looking fun but I am wondering how well you think my 2.0 convertible 4wd Tracker will hold up to trail riding...  I have a 2" body lift + a 2" spring lift, 1.5" wheel spacers and 225/75/16 bfg MT's on aluminum rims but each feel a good 20lbs heavier than stock.  I will be traveling 2 track/fire roads where I will find a mixture of sand, ruts, & mud puddles.  Any ideas what my weakest links are likely to be?  It has 240,000+ highway/city miles on it.

I'm thinking your diff gearing/clutch life if you haven't increased the ring and pinion ratio.  I didn't see where you mentioned whether you have a manual or auto tranny, but swapping in a higher ratio would be more better if you could get your hands on a set of 5.12 ring and pinions.   With taller/heavier tires you would enjoy the improvement in regaining some of the power from your engine.   Bzzr2 had a 2 door ZR2 with large tires (31"?) and suspension lift.  He'd be the guy to tell you how well his truck held up to his trail riding.

Thanks, It is an Automatic and the engine seems to power it well enough for me, it is zippy off the line but I normally drive it like I maintain it, not like I stold it...  I have had carborated and fuel injected Samurai's and a 95 Tracker LSI and this 2.0L is by far the most powerful of all.

Here it is sitting at work this morning, ready to travel north this weekend and find some trails and hopefully drive on the freeway back home.
