weird smoking problem
« on: August 01, 2010, 11:17:56 AM »
When I start my 92 Tracker tintop, I don't get any smoke or when I drive around town it is fine. When I am driving at highway speeds for 5 or 10 minutes and stop at a light then take off I get a big puff of smoke. What do you think? Thanks Rob ???

Sounds like blow-by. Do you have to add oil on a regular basis but have no leaks?

I,m not sure, I have only run 1 tank of gas through it so far. What exactly is blow-by and what causes it? The problem seems to be hit or miss because I drove it today about 40 miles and didn't notice any smoking. But on saturday I was fogging people out at the stop lights.

Have you checked the oil level, sound's like it could be sucking oil in the PCV

No noticable oil consumption. I'll put a new PCV in and try it. Anybody have a reply my blow by question. I dont understand if you mean blowing through the rings or elsewhere. Thanks Rob

In my book, blow by means compression and exhaust gases blowing past the rings
into the crank case, BTW did you just rebuild this engine???

No, I got it in the beginning of the summer from a guy that said it had a trans leak on the cat and it was smoking alot. For $900 bucks I took a chance and trailered it home. Turned out the trans fluid and motor oil where way over filled. So I changed the oil and drained some fluid from the trans and ran it to burn all the excess off the cat and the smoking went away until that one day. I havn't used it much lately to see if the problem is still there or not. Thinking back I did change the PCV when I did the plugs and oil. The back two plugs where a little oily when I checked them but they burned off by the time I got around to changing them. I did a quick comp test with a junky tester and they where all pretty even around 120# I guess a little low but maybe that was the tester. It has 143K on it, I don't know if the timing belt was done yet and I am willing to bet the valves where never touched.

Is it an auto trans? 3 speed or 4 speed/OD trans?

I find the 3 speed trans likes to be over filled a little, about 1/2 quart

Your trans might still be puking fluid onto the cat, so that could be the problem

I stopped using the cork gaskets, they just leak too much, I glue the pan on
with gray silicone and no leaks

Its a 3 speed. I really need to start driving it more so I can get a better idea what is going on. A 4spd sound good. What options do I have? But I guess that is another topic. Thanks Rob

Might be the cat, gets hot on the freeway and when you stop
it lets smoke build from burning off trans fluid, leaving your smoke.

Have you verified where the smoke is really coming from? the exhaust pipe
or just from under the truck???

if it isnt burning off the cat, & it is coming from the exhaust, it sounds like worn valve guides, & or seals. get a friend or someone to follow you & verify.

when you drive the oil is in the top of engine, then stop at a stoplight for a couple minutes, the oil seeps around the guides due to a higher vacuum at idle, & as you accelerate it will burn the oil that seeped. I have owned several vehicles that did that, usually you can get by replacing just the seals & can do that with engine in the vehicle in most vehicles.

also has engine ever been overheated? ever? a overheat will cause the seals to harden & then start breaking away & then this willl occur.
