samurai diff flange on SJ410 diff?
« on: August 04, 2010, 08:25:16 PM »
Hi, I got a rebuilt 6.5:1 Tcase from rocky road for my SJ410, they told me the samurai and SJ410 Tcase's were the same, but when I went to put it in the drive shaft flanges didn't match mine >:(, (I live in Canada so I'm not going to send it back down there), so I'm wondering if the diff flanges from a samurai will fit my 82 SJ410 diffs,if they do I'll just get some sami flanges and drive shafts :).

82 SJ410: 5" lift (spoa), home made cross over steering, bestop, custom rust lots of it,33"tsl, 6.5:1's. To install: Toyota diffs being built. To build: roll cage, traction bar, bumpers.

89 sidekick: lift 2"suspension 3"body, 31's, aluminum rims, warn hubs, (4) lights on roof, turbocharger.

Or hybrid the flange and the driveshaft, provided the U-joints are the same

I'm not sure about the 82, but I know the 83 and 84 SJ-410 have the same flange as the 87 and earlier Samurai's.  Do you have the drum brakes on the front axle or the disks?

Hybird the flange and driveshaft, do you mean keeping my driveshafts and just switching out the ends of the driveshafts  ???

And I have the drum brakes Drone637.

Thanks guys.

Yes, I have one to run a Samurai flange on my SlipYoke Eliminator
and a Sammy front shaft, well it was, but now it's a custom one
made of the stripped off parts and DOM, but it's got a SideKick
Diff end and the rest Samurai

Ok, so you have an older model of SJ-410 then me.  Do you know if they sent you a t-case with the 88.5 flanges?

If you send a message to ewbewley he should be able to tell you if the flanges changed between the 82 and 83 model SJ-410's.  I know the t-case is different.   But you can swap your drum break on the back of the case in order to keep the emergency brake.

I would keep your t-case around as well.  It is a straight bolt into a Samurai and you have 10% lower gears in high and low range, perfect for a buddy that is putting some 235/75 R15 mud tires on a stock SJ-413/Samurai.

That might work, thanks Wild, ???.

I ordered one with the smaller bolt pattern 86-88.5 (12mm bolt head).

You have a buddy the would want my tcase Drone637, or did you mean if I have a buddy?

RRO also made a mastake on my order, I ordered two diveshaft spacers a 1" and a 1,1/4",they sent me (4) two of each, so if I lift my sami or kick I wont have to buy more  :) .

It's sounds like they sent you a late model t-case. This would have the larger bolt pattern that is on 88.5 to 95 Samurai here in the US. The 86-88 Samurai should match your 82-83 SJ410 and I know they match the '85 case. The easiest thing to do is just change the flanges on your t-case. An impact gun, hammer and punch and you're done...

Good luck, Eric

There you go, just swap the flanges.  You will want to put your drum brake on the back anyway.

I mean if you have a buddy.  All mine already have after-market gears installed.  :D

That was my first thought, but the driveshaft spacers I got don't fit either and they have both bolt patterns (and its the small bolt pattern on the spacers that fits the tcase), its the tapered ring that goes inside the flange its to big,and the small bolt pattern is also to big for my flanges. So I thought changing the driveshafts and flanges would be the easiest. do you guys know if the driveshafts are the same length(its a swb).

And also if high range isn't much lower then stock will I need lower ring&pining gears for 33/12.5/15,TSL Boggers, as of now its off road only, but would like to use high range, I have the stock 4:10's in it.

Thanks for all your help guys.

I run 5.12 gears in my SJ-410 with the 6.5:1 t-case.  It was kind of a dog when I first put it together, but a new carb from e-Bay made it run much nicer.

You are kind of stuck with the 4.10 gears.  I switched to Samurai axles early on, that would allow you to pick up some 5.12 or 4.30 gears if needed.

Drive shafts should be the same as the t-cases should be the same size externally.

Have you got the square driveshafts? I'm pretty sure that they have a different bolt pattern.

LJ50 & LJ80 diff gears are an option for SJ410's.

The ends of the driveshafts are square.

LJ50 & LJ80 diff gears are an option for SJ410's.

What gears do the LJ80's have, I can get some from a LJ80.
