Is it an 8 or 16 valve? Which is better!!
« on: August 10, 2010, 05:28:10 PM »
Hi All
Im thinking of buying a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick JLX 4x4. (5 door)
Does anyone know if they are 8 or 16 valve.
Also, are the 8 valve better than the 16 valve version?
Thanks for the great forum and your help is greatly appreciated

a '95 is a 16V, which is better??? well the bottom end is pretty much
the same with some minor changes in the pistons, and the 16V produces
15 more HP so most want the 16V engine

I would take a 1.6 16V over a 1.6 8V any day.  15 more HP can't hurt.  Some people will argue about the torque coming on faster on an 8V than a 16V......I don't care, I'll still take the 16V.
Just my personal preference.

The only dyno comparison that I've ever seen shows the 8V and 16V identical up to around 3000rpm and then the torque on the 8V tails off, the 16V torque keeps climbing.

8v is better. put a turbocharger on it and it will have the same or more horse power as a 16v

For on road use I liked my 97 Tracker and my 98 X-90 with the 16V motor... but for off road I liked my 8V Kick better... I like how low you can lug the 8V motor without stalling it and it jumping right back to life even at really low RPM... you can not do that as well with the 16V.
