There is no interchangeability. You'll need to remove most of the 1.6 harness and install / splice in the 2.0 harness. Some stuff like the EVAP sensor could be used from the 1.6 and you should splice into the 1.6 gauge cluster to make that all function factory. It would be a major wire job to make it smog compliant with the dash off and manuals out.

Hi Ive just pulled a j20 out of my 98 model & put in a h27 I did a major rewire to fit the ecu only to find that the ecu was fitted with an internal immobilizer & wouldn't work without the original key & immobilizer module  so have now been told I should of purchased a Megasquirt ecu and would only have had to do a minor rewire, and a re-tune after fitting it . I have a 2 liter wiring diagram that I will try to put on here somewhere . cheers Paul 

If you have an internal immobiliser then just take both ECUs to a radio or electronics swap and ask them to copy over the codes from the original ECU, those codes are held in a Serial EEPROM chip - should take them less than 30mins. A main dealer can also do the job using a scantool but they usually charge a fair bit of money for doing the job.
Megasqurt isn't street legal and doesn't have sufficient inputs/outputs to drive all the emissions equipment on a 2.7 so you may struggle to get it inspected.

Heck with all that, just drop in a carb'd small block chevy or 4.3 v6. Done. Or you can turbo with less headache too.

I just did the wire harness on my 2.0L swap.  you will need a full set of manuals for the vitara. I bought an electronic manual online here: http://store.payloadz.com/detail_html.asp?Id=778130 .  It took me a weekend to cut off what I didnt need from the factory 2.0L harness and label all the wires that needed to be connected.  Then you will need a manual for your 97 to figure out where to connect the wires.  believe it or not, a lot of the colors were the same between my 92 tracker and the 2000 vitara I used as a donor.  it seems a lot more intimidating than it actually is.  If you have any questions once you get into it I'd be glad to help you figure out what wires need to be connected where on the 2.0L harness.
