OK men, I need your help.  My 1998 Tracker is making a funny clicking noise up front in two wheel drive.  The manual hubs are turned to Free.  If I switch it to 4 wheel high, the noise goes away, again the hubs are still Free.  The noise is pronounced going forward or in reverse in 2 WD.  The clicking noise gets faster as the vehicle goes faster.   Like a rock in your tire noise.  My first thought is a bad birfield, but they aren’t engaged in 2 WD are they?  Any ideas?

The only time I've had a clicking noise is
front, is in 4WD and hubs engaged, it sounded
like a roller coaster clicking as you get ready
for the first drop.

I was thinking tho, are you sure the hubs are
not stuck in the engaged mode, and the CVs
are clicking from wear ?? while going forward,
Other than that, a bad U-joint does make
some clicking sounds too.

im betting on the u joint, check that your front shaft is really disengaged too.  next bet is the hubs too.  never had your problem but i have had 2 trackers that got so crappy that they would not engage, and when i took them apart the springs were weak!  might not be 100% holding them in, if stock hubs the spring pushes and pulls the locking ring in and out...

you did look for rubbing stuff..... and that rock right?

Gonna find out today.  Had to put the Tracker in the shop because I had a control arm bushing that the bolt had frozen up in.  I found this out as I was trying to install Calminis steering stabilizer.  While the shop has it,
I'm going to have them put on a set of Warn premium hubs.  Hope it was just a hub, I'm running low on moola.

It was a bad hub.  Got those bulletproof Warns on now!

Watch the hub bolts, they work loose, they
are not "cone washered" like the stockers,
that and you could have saved the $100 on
the new hubs by cleaning the old ones, save
the old hubs, just in case you find the new
hubs to be less than you expect

I'm only running 235's.  I don't think they would be large enough to cause hub bolts to loosen?  I also have this "shield" that goes around my hubs.  I can't even see my hub bolts to see if they are coming loose.  Should I remove that shield?
