Samurai Hub Removal
« on: September 11, 2010, 07:27:37 PM »
I have an 87 Samurai that I am trying to remove the front wheel bearings for inspection/replacement.  I got the outer wheel bearing out, the book says the hub should now slide of the spindle but it doesn't seem to want to go.  Are there any tricks to getting the hub off of the spindle? Also...can you add grease to the birfield joints by removing that top cover? If so, what kind of grease should be used?  Thanks for the help.

when you take the hub cover off there is a snap ring holding the hub on in the center
88.5 Samurai 33" TSL, 6.5:1 Xcase Gears, 92" wheelbase, 3link rear, SPOA front w/ drop shackle, open/locked. Soon to be this spring: Toyota front and Dana44 rear w/ homemade offset.

To clarify MadMaxZuki's post:

To get at the wheel bearings, you first must remove the locking hub assembly.

This is done by removing the six bolts on the dial face of the locking hub then reemoving the snap ring that holds the axle shaft in place.

Once that is done, you can remove the six bolts that hold the locking hub assembly onto the hub assembly itself.

This exposes the wheel bearing lock nut and washer.

Details on how this works can be found in the '88 Samurai Factory Service Manual (search for fsm) at Acks' FAQ (see link in signature, below).

I hope that this helps!

Right, I pulled the locking hubs, took the snap ring off got the outer wheel bearing out, but I can't get the hub off of the spindle to get to the inner wheel bearing.  Do I just use a gear puller to get the hub off of the spindle, or can I bang on it with a mallet to get it loose?

There may have been some confusion what hub I was referring to.  I removed the brake pads and caliper, locking hub, snap ring, and outer wheel bearing.  I was trying to remove the hub (the actual hub with the wheel studs) so I could grease the inner and outer wheel bearings.  I put the wheel back onto the hub and pulled on the wheel and I was able to get the hub off of the spindle.  Only problem is, the inner wheel bearing stayed on the spindle.  That inner wheel bearing is stuck pretty good on the spindle, but I think I can get it free...project for another night.
