how to bore a cat converter?
« on: May 19, 2004, 12:34:48 PM »
well with gas out of hand, i'm looking for anything to get better mileage....and some added power doesn't hurt.  My Catalytic converter is going bad, very quick. it's 2 years old and the place that put it on is a bunch of retards.  let's just say they screwed up my entire exaust system big time.  anyhow i'm going to remedy the situation soon but it will have to wait till after i move.  cause i need the money real bad to pay for $2-a-gallon of gas over 3000 miles. YIKES!  :o

so my question i've heard a few guys talk about how they "bored" out their cat...how did you guys doi it.  when i had a Z24 the j-body guys just jabbed a broomstick into the cat hard a few times started the car to spit out the stuff broken up inside and bolted it all back together...is it the same with sidekicks?

i took out my cat, put it in a vise, got a pry bar and hammer,  got on the bench, and beat the living shit out of it.  it was alot funner than i thought it would be.  but make sure you don't put the bar though the case.  oh yea after i threw the cat away. ;D

I just did mine last weekend,i took mine off and used a large screw driver and a hammer to break up the core and then a larger pry bar type screw driver once i got further into it.Dumping it out many times as i went along.

Word of CAUTION: Do not breath the dust that comes out of it or leave it where any pets will get to it,nasty stuff.
Do it away from any nice vehicles, the powder/ dust scratches paint very easily.

I used a drill and a drill bit, I did it on the car, just unbolted it from the header and went to town on it. Worked pretty good.

u guys know that since it isnt a straight peice of pipe it can hurt power??..plus not to mention the crap that now flows into the air..just something to think about

ah also forgot to mention..if u live in a state that makes u smog ur car people that gut there cats is the reason...if people didnt gut there cats then they wouldnt need a baby sitter. so far since i have owned the tracker i have had to smog it every year because it is at risk for failing..if people didnt gut there cats or remove other envormint helping things or drive pos cars on the road i wouldnt have to fork out 140$ a year

Bahaha! What is this smog testing that you speak of ??? ;)

But yeah, if you're hellbent on gutting it, I had luck using a combination of a drill, crowbar, icepick and prybar to break up the core while it was clamped in a vice, then I just welded it back together.

Our testing here is every 2 years and i just had mine done. mine still has 2 cats on the exhaust manifolds which control fuel mixture. Since my tracker had a 4 cylinder it only has to pass for 4 cylinder readings. If it should fail i will put another cat back on with bigger pipes. ;D But for now i got 2 years. ::)

I too live in a state where we have to pass emisions.  I have a 24" piece of staight pipe clamped in where the cat goes.  So next time I need to take emisions I'll just clamp the cat back in.

Is it ok to replace it with a piece of straight pipe? Does it help power and gas mileage?

You could tell it really dull stories?  That oughtta bore it.

I would seriously consider getting a piece of straight pipe bent and flanged to swap out the cat (and whay haven't I done that to mine?  Hmm...)

It's best if you make a 'test pipe' and bolt it to both ends of the exh. where the cat and pipe were before then you will have A good cat in case you get A fix it ticket

Man...... I have been running open pipes for the last year and a half and then Texas comes out with emissions testing, so I had to go buy a pair of cats and a pair of mufflers for my samurai..... I passed emissions though....

:o :-/ ??? ::) Kids! Unless it's clogged or no longer cuts down on NOx or HC then leave well enough alone. It doesn't give you a seat of the pants feel or drastic fuel economy. If you ask me the energy exerted on "gutting" the cat could be used elsewhere to actually add performance. Anyone with a dyno sheet to prove me wrong post it.  :P
