High-tec retread review for CZ
« on: June 19, 2004, 01:23:54 PM »
Last week I put a set of 235/75/15 M/T tires on from high-tec retreading.  CZ asked me to give a review of them.  On the road they are a little noisier than the street tires I had before, but they are not bad at all.  Much less noise than I expected from M/T tires.  I went wheeling today at a place I was at in April.  There was a hill there that most people I was with were struggling with.  I didn't attempt it in April.  With the new tires I walked right up it.  No problem at all.  On another taller hill I started to spin my tires halfway up it.  The tires were really throwing mud.  Next run I got a little head start and went right up.  A TJ with wider muds than mine had a little more troble going up the hill.  The tread cleaned out well on the trail.  Usually with the street tires there would be a ton of mud caked in them and when I got back on the street they would spit out all the trapped mud.  When I got back on the street with these there was no mud left to spit out.  I am very impressed with these.  Of course since my last tires were so lame off road I don't have much of a basis to compare these to other AT or MT tires.

Here are some pics of the place from April go give you and idea what the hills are like.

On a sidenote, those look exactly like my Cooper Discoverer STT's... right down to the alternating shoulder lugs.

They are the OTRs.  I don't think the regulars have the scalloped edges.

Did they balance out good? Looks like it, I dont see any outside weights on the pic. How smooth are they at speed in the interstate?

When I had my new Dunlops installed they put the weights on the inside of the wheel so they were't visible.  They could have done done the same to his retreads.
Those tires look real good, but what are the grooves across the tread of the tire?  Is that siping or something?

The fronts needed very little weight.  The rear needed more.  The weights on the rear are about 3 inches long.  The company recomends static balancing (whatever that is) and putting the weights on both the inside and outside of the tire.  They guarantee that if that is done they will balance with less than 2 ounces.  I don't have any vibration at high speed with these.  The things you see in the tread are joints where one piece of rubber meets another.  I think the retread is made in several peices and joined together.
