clutch adjustment?
« on: October 07, 2010, 04:05:48 PM »
WTF am I doing wrong?

Just replaced the clutch (disk, pressure plate, T/O bearing)  - LUK brand
replaced the clutch release shaft bushes.
Had the flywheel skimmed.

Afterwards. I adjusted the clutch to what I thought was spec, and it wouldn't disengage.

So I installed a new Beck-Arnley clutch cable.

Adjusted the cable to take up all the free play in the clutch lever (on the trans).  If I adjust it any further, the release bearing will be in constant contact with the pressure plate spring fingers.

Clutch will disengage, but just barely.  It engages when the clutch pedal is released, about 1" from full depressed.

Should I adjust the clutch tighter and let the bearing ride on the pressure plate?  If not, then I have a problem with clutch lever travel - is there a spec for that?

UPDATE - measured the travel of the cable at each end.  (brand new cable Beck Arnley p/n 093-0623)

21mm at clutch fork (not enough, found a spec of 1")
28mm at pedal clevis.

Question: how does a cable move more at one end than the other?
Answer: a poorly made cable (Beck Arnley p/n 093-0623)

Which might answer one of my previous questions, "why have I had to replace the cable 3 times in 5 years?"  For the record, they were all Beck Arnley p/n 093-0623. (I save receipts)

In case anyone missed the subtle warning, my personal experience leads me to advise against the use of Beck Arnley p/n 093-0623

It sounds like the cable is twisting between the pedal and the clutch lever.... Have someone depress the clutch pedal and watch (under the hood) it for twisting or kinking... I have bought clutch cables that twisted right out of the box.
